The Modernist has a reputation as San Francisco's swanky, exclusive, tech-centric club. While it may have an exclusive vibe, it's actually quite easy to gain access, with the clientele ranging from privately hosted event attendees to high-paying members, supposedly the city's most elite tech entrepreneurs. The club's location in the financial district near the Embarcadero is either a tourist-filled nightmare or a ghost town, with no exterior signage to indicate its presence, save for a bouncer in a black trench coat. The interior design is dark and functional, with adequate seating and the potential for loud music.
The biggest disappointment for many visitors is the drinks, which are described as disgusting, inconsistent, and tasting like chemicals. Some come with cocktail caviar, while others do not. The only true benefit of joining the Modernist, it seems, is the opportunity to network with the city's tech elite. Otherwise, it's a rather underwhelming experience, with better value to be found elsewhere for event hosting. Despite its reputation, the Modernist appears to be more style than substance, trading on its exclusivity rather than offering a truly exceptional experience.
I've been here 5 times. Josue is such a great mixologist. Love the drinks and the ambiance.

It's a cold dark life when you love the liquids of vagabonds. Happy tea time isn't what the riff raff of youthful en vogue persons pursue. Deep deep deep furious ways. Deep deep deep gory monsters.

Outstanding cocktails, service and food. And a cool space too.
