“Visited Doris Place this past June during our family trip to the Big Island. We visited Holualoa during our trip to pay respects at a local cemetery there. Afterwards we stopped by a pleasant mom and pop small store called Doris. According to my wife's aunt, the store is named after Doris (who we also visited) who has run the store through many generations (she has recently retired). If you are in the area I recommend visiting Doris Place in a small little town called Holualoa. You will get good local community store vibes there.”

“KTA Superstore –

We made several stops at KTA Superstore during our trip to the Big Island, mainly for groceries and fresh local ingredients. Being a home chef, I come prepared with a lot of spices and a well prepared menu for our 7 days. It’s a well-stocked store with a good selection of produce, meats, and Hawaiian specialties.

The fresh produce section had some great finds, but prices were steep— $18 for 18 eggs due to the ongoing bird flu issues. Luckily, we found a slightly better deal on eggs at $8 per dozen and grabbed two. Worth noting for memories of 2025!

One of the highlights was the fresh ahi poke selection. We picked up high-quality ahi that we used to make delicious poke bowls back at our rental. Much better than what we had at Big Kahuna Grill and way cheaper.

Pros:
✔️ Well-stocked with essentials and local specialties
✔️ Convenient locations for travelers staying in Kona
✔️ High-quality poke and fresh seafood

Bottom Line: KTA Superstore is a great stop for fresh local ingredients and meal prep supplies, but expect to pay a premium. If you’re staying in a rental and planning to cook, it’s still more cost-effective than eating out every night, but shopping smart is key!

Here’s a few pictures of meals we made:
Teriyaki Chicken, made Chinese Chicken Salad with Leftover, Poki Bowls, Ono Fish Tacos, Asian Sticky Ribs, Hawaiian Macaroni Salad, the best breakfasts and so much more! I think I want to write a cookbook now.”

“I don't know if it's the cheapest, but I stopped by on the way and bought some food. I was tired of all the salty food in Hawaii, but the salad here had no seasoning and the musubi wasn't salty, so I enjoyed it.”

“The Kona WalMart & their famous wall of SPAM .. see photo !!Since World War ll, spam has remained an island staple. It's available everywhere. Even the McDonald's inside this Walmart, SPAM & rice is a featured meal.On the brighter side, the WalMart's in Hawaii have a huge assortment of quality Hula material for those talented enough to sew & craft. They also carry an entire department of Hawaiian based tourist items at prices far below the gift-shops. The 4 star rating is due to WalMart discontinuing their complimentary shuttle bus from the cruise ship dock to the store. This is a serious setback for crew members who need to stock up on personal items & can't afford taxi cab service. This store sits high in the hills above town & has the best unobstructed view of the Kona Coast & Pacific Ocean in all of this beautiful area's landscape.”

“I am not too surprised about the prices here. It is HUH-VAI-EEE. Place is clean and decent selection. Standard Bakery stuff. Bought a salad that was good. It looks smalls in the photo but had two chicken breasts in it. I was stuffed.”

“We came here frequently while visiting the Island. It was a very convenient location for us & as a tourist, I thought prices were reasonable. Great selection of poke, baked goods & ready made foods. They also sell alcohol & have a decent selection of beer, wine & liquor. There were other things a tourist might be looking for... hats, sunscreen, flip flops & souvenirs to name a few. We usually came early in the morning & there was always a good selection of items. Store was very clean. Staff were friendly & helpful.”

“What an amazing bathing suit collection! I was so impressed — their clothing selection is actually better than the food options. The styles are perfect for Hawaii living, not the same ones you see on the mainland. I could’ve spent hours browsing and even went back twice because I didn’t get through it all the first time. Super happy with what I found! Pro tip: go during the day — I went once around 5 p.m. and it was packed.”

“Paradise mexican store has been the go to place for my every need. They have fresh groceries, fresh bread when it's made. The piñatas and candy bags are perfect for any parties and celebrations. The owner of the store is the most amazing sweet women I have ever met in my life, very knowledgeable and accommodating to your need when your shopping at her store. I highly recommended coming and checking this store out if your in need of authentic Mexican groceries and anything else. The hours are very accommodating. This place is perfect for our community. “A fun shop loaded with SE Asian specialty foods. We particularly like their produce, straight from local farmers in most cases. They also have a great curry selection and the only place in town with the Mae Ploy coconut milk, the absolute best for curries, yogurt and desserts. If you’re into snacks, they have a fun selection too!”

“Only place open in the late night/ early AM, and I needed some med and I am grateful it was open. Seems like the biggest Safeway I've visited as a tourist. Thanks!”

“You *may* find your favorite, hard-to-locate grocery item(s) here.Note that it will probably be grossly overpriced if they have it... but if you find it on their shelves, you will most likely buy it at their price. Also note, this ChoiceMart meat dept is one of the best among the supermarkets on island.”

“Some of the grab and go items were tastier than fine dining! But so much plastic waste...I wish that the wraps were available in parchment paper instead of plastic clamshells and I wish that the bowls were paper instead of plastic.”
