“Super cool spot. Upon arriving, I had no clue where the entrance was. It was only when people came out of the building that I realized that was the entrance. Once inside, I was left in awe of the magnitude of the place. A huge old warehouse transformed into a book “store”? Absolutely amazing. REMEMBER, you put the price in the books, not the other way around. When I was here, the cashier tried to give me a price when it shouldn't be like that. Don't feel intimidated and pay whatever you think is fair. There’s also a Spanish section right by the entrance.”

“Lake Katherine is amazing. My wife and I take our son for walks over there. You can walk around and view nature. They have a monarch butterfly exhibit that's open in the spring/summer that kids will absolutely love. You can go canoeing in the lake and watch the swans which would be a perfect date with that special someone if you're into that kind of things also with amazing views of wildlife, wild plants, a community garden hidden away in the back that people plant and grow veggies and plants for the local pantry. They have a small book library you can borrow from but please take one, give one if you can. Lake Katherine has a great experience and I'm sure anyone would love it..”

“We are leaving the Ronald McDonald house today after my daughter had a successful kidney transplant. This house is such a welcome blessing to so many families. They keep families together during some of the most difficult times of their lives. The generosity and dedication from staff and volunteers is so wonderful and it is a place that really feels like a home away from home. We are so grateful for this place and those who keep it going.”

“I started back going to this food pantry after the pandemic but the lady that check you in is rude. She’s only nice to the people that she knows. She tells people there’s a long line and to come back later. I also had to ask her for my ticket to go down stairs and there was only 5 people in line. Someone else was complaining they came that morning and she told them to come back. They tell people the tickets determine what meat they get. One lady left because she had to go to work. She also gave one lady ground turkey when she asked for fish and told her since she did not have a ticket she could only get ground turkey. Please we have to be a little more kind to one another. The team that volunteered before the pandemic was kind to everyone whether they knew you or not. Some of the volunteers are nice but one or 2 mean ones just put some of the people that come in on edge otherwise this is a very nice food pantry.”

“Located in a large modern architectural building in the Chicago neighborhood, Lawndale, BBF is very welcoming. They offer so many important services in this low-income community. -Social programs, academic tutoring, emotional health services and career development opportunities. When I was asked to volunteer at a city wide "baby shower" and toy giveaway, I knew immediately that I wanted to do it. Spending my day greeting expectant mothers and children who were anxious to pick out toys, I was so glad to be a part of the event. I knew that Lawndale had a lot of gun violence, but I still met way more young pregnant mothers who had just recently lost their partners to it than I expected. Way more. Gun violence and poverty is a serious threat to this community, so organizations like Building Brighter Futures are so needed. The event held here was pretty amazing. Not only were there tons of brand new baby clothing, but there were also new strollers, pack-n-plays, and breast pumps. They had free toys for kids and they had massage therapists on site who were offering free prenatal massages for the expectant mothers. It was truly wonderful to see so many people come together to help some of the most vulnerable people in this community. -women and children. This is a great organization to consider if you're wanting to donate time and money to something of real value.”

“Had a wonderful time at the art center this past Saturday. It was my first time in Chicago in general, and my best friend and I were looking for local art centers to check out and museums. I'm glad we went to the SSCAC, as we saw works by Black artists and even got to chat with the ED, and attend a Q and A. Places like these serve as integral parts of a community, and I would highly recommend others go too to learn some history and view gorgeous art.”

“My Dad served honorably in WWII. A member of "the greatest generation" he was a great man and beloved by many, not only his family but community also.I don't know how I could have gotten through his funeral day without the respect and acknowledgment that came from beyond our family's mourning. The armed servicemen in uniform that saluted his flag draped casket as he was carried past them to his final resting place and their beautiful folding of the flag and presenting it to my Mom was so uniting. It really made one feel that our Country cared for its Servicemen even so many decades later. But most of all I thank Tom Day and his Bugles Across America. The volunteer who came and performed Taps was an excellent musician. That day we were especially blessed as the funeral home had also arranged for the Servicemen I mentioned and they too by chance, planned to play Taps. Our family was so so touched and surprised when Taps was played echo style by the two buglers. That beautiful and well deserved tribute to my father meant the world to my Mom and our family and we speak of it often. Bugles Across America is a wonderful organization with wonderful volunteers that at a very short notice give comfort and inspiration at a time most needed. I support them whole-heartedly.”

“Great organization that substantially improves the lives of families and individuals transitioning from homelessness. Having nicely appointed homes helps most of those served to remain in housing. Corporate sponsors (CB2, Casper, Element) and generous individual contributions combined with volunteers and paid staff enable them to serve many in need.”

“Great place to start gymnastics. We have younger children that started gymnastics with TriStar in spring and by end of summer they are able to do many new things like cart wheels, flips and climbing ropes and other skills on equipment with assistance. I'm not looking to make my children competitive gymnasts but give them opportunities to try something and get some skills. I think the staff here do an excellent job and connect really well with the kids.Location is an old former warehouse so it is a bit remote and sketchy, building is dusty sometimes cold or hot because it is a huge space.”

“Helping people should be altruistic and, in essence, when you commit your valuable time to help, just the act act alone is justifiable as an altruistic gesture. But as a philosopher and political scientist. I argue that our world, specifically the Western world, punishes people if they do wrong. Even the slightest of mismanagement in one's life can lead to a fine, ticket, or jail time. I volunteered at the greater food depository on my own and not under the authority of the court, school, or fraternity. Yet there's no reward, no kudos, no glory, just my own act of kindness. You see, there's an imbalance here. Altruism is overrated. Good people need to be rewarded when we do good, not in money but in glory.”
