“I’ve been shopping at this location for almost 6 years, and I’ve generally had positive experiences. I truly enjoy most of the employees I interact with, which makes this situation even more disappointing.
Today, April 24th (my daughter’s 1st birthday) I came in to pick up a cake I had ordered two weeks in advance for her birthday. I was really excited to see how it turned out, but when it was handed to me, I was immediately disappointed. It looked nothing like the reference photos I had provided. When I expressed my concern, the decorator explained that she made it that way so it “wouldn’t dry out,” which was never mentioned at the time of ordering.
I ended up returning the cake and walking away, already upset. While grabbing a small item for my daughter, I noticed the same baker shrugging her shoulders and saying “oh well.” That attitude was honestly more frustrating than the cake itself.
I’ve never experienced this kind of dismissiveness here before. I do believe I spoke with the bakery manager, and she did offer to discount the cake or remake it, which I appreciate, but at that point, I was too upset and just wanted to leave.
This was a really important day for my family, and the experience fell far short of expectations. I hope this feedback is taken seriously so future customers don’t have a similar experience.
Edit: Thank you Alban for righting your wrong! The replacement cake was incredible! My kids, husband and the rest of my family really enjoyed it”
“I love to shop at Aldi's. Ours is never crowded and you don't feel rushed I don't like messing around with the quarter to get a shopping cart but I guess that's what they need that's what they need”

“Brock at Hy-Vee Altoona needs recognition. I am an impatient doordasher. He told me 30 to 40 minutes... Due to a false fire alarm caused disruption earlier that day... Brock and team had my order ready, took less than 15 minutes. A senior with mobility issues got her groceries, on her table, complete. Thank you Brock, thank you Hy-Vee for this wonderful service you provide.... As a doordasher, I don't need huge tips.... Give me a 5 Star review.. it means more than cash.... Brock is the force behind the scenes that makes what I do possible..”
“The employees are excellent, kind, and helpful. But not enough of them are staffed and they're made to work too fast. The company is able to afford to staff more employees and should do it - it's the only thing that tarnishes the store's image, in my eyes.”
“Nice little store. It doesn't have everything I need personally, but I come here to grab cheese, snacks or fresh produce. They have nice produce. Great prices but not a whole lot cheaper than say Walmart”
“It's a small little store in the neighborhood. Depending on what you need, you might not find it. However, what you do find will likely be cheap. I got 4 chicken breast and leg peices for around 5 dollars!!!”
“The sympathy floral vase that was ordered was gorgeous and personalized to fit our relative's interest. Dottie was A-One to work with on this order! Highly Recommend to others!”
“We brought our track team and coaches in Thursday evening of State Track week. They did a fantastic job to accommodate our crew of 25 and get us through the line, providing us with exceptional service. We went on to win our first state title in school history on Saturday!! Thank you!!”
“My favorite for my market purchases. Very good prices compared to the market. Convenience is important and definitive here. Overall is the best option when you want to save and eat well or live comfortably.”
“Hy-Vee has always been a nice, clean and friendly place to buy groceries. This location was no exception. Help is always nearby. There are always friendly and polite employees available to help. The cleanest grocery store you'll find.”
“Honestly I just really love this place it has most of my favorite things and if you go to one of the aisles for the ice sparkling water it's only $0.98 and a lot of their stuff is 98 cents I get some people think that is a lot of prices but it's not to me also I love going there to get my Wax Candy because they're only a dollar for the wax candy so I get to get about four bags of them they have donuts and cookies anything you could want or need Cash Saver has it I'm only 10 years old but I do go there a lot with my mom and I love it so does my mom we go there all the time every Sunday so yeah to the people that are saying and giving two stars and three stars and one star here's a reason that you shouldn't do that thank you Cash Saver so much”
“Hy-Vee is a solid and dependable grocery store that offers a wide variety of products, good customer service, and a clean shopping environment, making it one of the more convenient places for everyday grocery shopping in the area. Overall, the experience was positive, and the store does many things well, although there are still a few areas where improvements could make the shopping experience even better.
One of the strongest aspects of Hy-Vee is the impressive product selection. The store carries a large variety of groceries, fresh produce, meats, dairy products, bakery items, frozen foods, household supplies, and health products, making it easy to complete all shopping in one visit. The produce section is usually well-stocked with fresh fruits and vegetables, and the meat and deli departments offer a good range of options for different budgets and preferences. The bakery and prepared food areas are also convenient for customers looking for quick meals or ready-to-eat items.
The overall cleanliness and organization of the store stand out positively. Aisles are generally easy to navigate, shelves are stocked neatly, and the environment feels comfortable and well-maintained. Shopping here feels less stressful compared to some overcrowded grocery stores, especially during non-peak hours. The store layout is practical and allows customers to find most items without much difficulty.
Customer service is another positive feature. Most employees are friendly, helpful, and professional, especially in departments such as the deli, bakery, and checkout areas. Staff members are usually willing to assist customers with locating products or answering questions, which contributes to a more welcoming shopping experience overall.
Another advantage of Hy-Vee is the convenience of additional services available inside many locations. Pharmacy services, floral departments, bakery sections, ready-made meals, and online pickup options make the store more versatile than a standard grocery retailer. These extra conveniences help save time and make shopping more efficient for busy customers and families.
However, there are a few areas where the experience could improve. Pricing on some products can feel higher compared to competing grocery stores, particularly for everyday household items and certain packaged foods. While the quality is generally good, some customers may find it difficult to consistently shop here on a tighter budget without relying on promotions or discounts.
The store can also become crowded during peak hours, which sometimes leads to longer checkout lines and a busier shopping environment. Although staff work hard to manage customer flow, the experience can occasionally feel rushed during weekends or evening hours.”
“A personal touch is the difference at hy-vee. Always a friendly voice that wants to assist you... of course ya pay a fraction more, but the service is so worth it.”
“Its a small hyvee so there are fewer options but the staff is always friendly and the store is pretty clean smaller store easy to find things unless they dont carry it”
“Always a good experience when I shop. Not everything they have is to my liking but it's always fun to try new things from around the world, expand my food awareness.”
“Like other Aldi, good selection of food and merchandise. Still not quite the same as our original experience in Germany, but not too bad either. First time we've lived near one here in the USA. Nice to look through their weekly ads and specials, never know what you might see.”
