  1. Johnston Ace Hardware - 5800 Merle Hay Road

5800 Merle Hay Road, Johnston IA 50131

    4.3 Superb 120 reviews

“I love Johnston ACE Hardware. Their small engine repair shop is excellent. I have my lawn mower and snow blower tuned up here every year. Zach is great to work with for pick-up and delivery and overall customer service. He’s very knowledgeable . One time I couldn’t get my Stihl chain saw started and the gentleman in the back worked on it until it started - all while I was standing there because I needed to use it sooner than later. I also had a couple of screens in my screen doors replaced. Excellent work on those. Every time I walk in the store someone is there to greet me and asks if I need help finding anything. Of course I do! It’s nice to have someone take me right to it rather than wasting my time looking all over the store. One time I broke a specialized screw on an old piece of equipment and Johnston ACE Hardware couldn’t find an exact replacement but was able to come up with something that worked even better than the old one. I seriously can’t say enough good things about this place.”

    4.7 Superb 135 reviews

“Have always found the staff here super helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. Was in the other day to have them replace the battery on the remote key fob for my mom's Honda (which they'd repaired for me on a previous occasion when the key was coming loose from the encasement) and cut some house key spares; they handled it quickly and professionally, which is why I still prefer getting stuff like this done here despite moving out of the neighborhood over a dozen years ago -- knowing it'll get done right is well worth the extra driving.”

3839 Merle Hay Road, Des Moines IA 50310

    4.7 Superb 62 reviews

“Very pleased with the service and product line. Last visit, Aiden helped me in the store's closing minutes to match an obscure paint color for a restoration project where I only had a decades old recipe to help. Aiden over-delivered and got the color spot on using modern product and formulations. This all comes after another SW location told me it couldnn't be done. The Merle Hay location is where I will be taking my business and recommending others use. The store also is carrying Level5 product now which makes me excited for the other projects coming up.”

I looked online and Ace hardware was the only store in town with the part in stock. I drove across town and this was my first time in the store. The price was extremely fair and I will be back often.”

“Outstanding service quality product and an excellent account rep by the name of Tom I want to apologize that that apartment complex over on the East Side that just had their second murder in 8 months has not paid you for your flooring jobs. Yet it's not the former manager's fault. It's definitely the newer New Jersey property management company. Look at the Secretary of State website. They have mechanics liens against the property!”

    4.4 Superb 89 reviews

“I come up here to these guys all the time since they opened up. At first because it was convenient because I live nearby, but honestly these guys are even worth a few extra minutes drive. Most recently I dropped off my mower because it was burning a ridiculous amount of oil after I changed the oil last fall. Turns out I overfilled it, rookie mistake. The service manager Martin took care of it for me, and when I asked for tips on how to take better care of it he was polite and encouraging. He didn’t gouge me an arm and a leg, either — and he even cleaned up my mower for me. They sharpen my knives, too, at a very reasonable price. I’d probably buy frozen yogurt here if they sold it, honestly. Really appreciate these guys being up here.”

“I stopped here 30 mins before they closed to grab one item. I expected everyone to be busy closing the store and thought I'd be rushing in and out. I asked where to locate what I needed and, instead of pointing me in the right direction or giving me an aisle number like most retail employees, the gentleman stopped what he was doing and walked me all the way to the other side of the store. He even took the time to go over what my options were and answer my questions. In addition, the cashier was very upbeat and friendly, the supervisor who came to assist him with a missing barcode was prepared- she had the item number written down because it was apparently an item that she gets called about frequently. Even the gentleman outside on carts was pleasant and helpful. He approached me and offered to take care of my cart despite there being plenty of carts in the bay that I'm assuming he still had to get inside for the night. I am not used to being impressed by this many retail employees in one shopping trip. I work in retail so it takes a lot to impress me.”

“I went in seeking a paint match for a repair job on the exterior of my house. My 1st attempt at a match at a different location (big box store) was a complete fail. My 2nd stop should, which should have been my first, Sherwin Williams in Grimes. The young lady who helped me was a delight to work with. When she showed me the matching paint after it was applied to my sample, I was unable to locate where the match paint was applied to my sample. SCORE! Thank you so much for the amazing service, and I will always choose Sherwin Williams for my 1st stop relating to every paint. She saved me SOOO much additional work today. The paint match was spot on.”
