“The Shady Rest is a wonderful motel. The cabins are cute, well maintained and very clean. They are nestled into the hillside in the ponderosa pines, yet within a 5 minute walk of main street and all of the restaurants. Most importanly, the hosts are kind, generous and extremely knowledgeable. Don't miss this lovely spot!”
“We had the pleasure of staying here for 5 nights. It worked out for us because it’s centered between all the sights we wanted to see. Showers were hot, beds were comfortable too! Courtyard was convenient and the vfw next door had very nice prices on adult beverages!”

“We’ve traveled all lower 48 USA states by car. The Holiday Inn in Custer, South Dakota is by far the cleanest, prettiest, most accommodating Holiday Inn we’ve ever stayed in our 50 yrs of traveling. They have unbelievable fresh ground coffee too! Our plans suddenly changed and we had to quickly cancel our 2 upcoming nights. “Larvetta” the manager was so kind to allow us to cancel and reimbursed us 100% for the 2 nights we cancelled. We’ve never experienced such incredible service!”
“This was a very clean place to stay. Totally needed to be updated. Very much outdated, the bathroom was the worst. Toilet was just a home toilet not a commercial toilet like it should be in a hotel. It took care of our needs, but wouldn't stay again as it needs major remodeling.”
“Great value for the price, very clean room and friendly staff!
The shower had consistently hot water and a clean bathtub. It’s also dog-friendly, which was a big plus! ?”

“Pricey, but within walking distance of a small lake and trail. Beautiful surroundings, there is a small artificial Beach on the lake and a swimming area. We didn't swim, but it it was nice to know that it was there, and the kids played on the beach. There was also a natural playground of boulders which was right across from our cabin and the perfect way to interact with nature”

“We had to clean the filter in the AC right when we got there. It was disgusting. Bathroom was a little small and the bathtub is EXTREMELY SLIPPERY.
SHOUT OUT TO CATHY. VERY HELPFUL, KIND, AND GENUINELY FRIENDLY. There is NO POOL BUT IF YOU ASK THE FRONT DESK FOR A PASS FOR THERE SISTER HOTEL DOWN THE STREET YOU CAN SWIM THERE. laundry machines were nice. 2.00 to wash and 2.00 to dry.”
“We were running kinda behind schedule, so we were not able to made it on time to Mount Rushmore and our booked hotel in Rapid City. We arrived in Custer around 7 pm, no booking in advance. October 2025 is off season for tourism in Custer, that's why most of hotels were closed for the winter or under remodeling. We stopped by two on the way - no 2 rooms availability, in Days Inn, the third one, few rooms on the first floor were available. It was a big luck for my family if 3 adults and my 3 month old baby. Almost all town is off season, but these guys are still standing, still operating!!! After some negative reviews in google, I was concerned about this place. But don't judge by the cover or by bad reviews! Yes, it's just a 2-star hotel, but staff was very attentive, friendly and helpful, helped us with luggage and in the morning with directions to Mount Rushmore, because Google maps were not updated much about local constructions, what was very surprising. Hotel is very clear, new carpet, new paint, new furniture in rooms, comfortable beds, and bathrooms with additional soft towels and good quality toiletries. Hotel has convenient location, and parking.”
“Overall this hotel is fantastic and I highly recommend it. Had a great stay here and was very dog friendly. They’d benefit from getting Do Not Disturb signs. Housekeeping just opened my door without warning (3 hours before checkout) and let one of my dogs out. Also lots of dog poop on the lawn area. As a dog owner, cmon other owners - do better”
