“They changed everything around in the store and I'm handicapped and it makes it very difficult to have to walk around and look for things! Also they have two or three registers and they only ever have one open in the lines are too long! I hate going to the Dollar Store. I must apologize to the Dollar General in Elm Mott. I thought I was reviewing the Dollar General in Lacy Lakeview on 77 and Craven. That store is a complete and total mess! So when you read this just realized I made a mistake in the locations of the stores and I hope this clear things up”
“I have found a variety of supplements here that are well-priced and have discovered new coconut milk based yogurts, sauerkrauts and other great products here! Only issue is that they sometimes have low stock of items like yogurts or certain supplements so am not sure when they’ll return.”

“Very interesting shops supporting homesteading skills. There is one shop for quilting, sewing, etc. There is a shop with toys, canning supplies, animal care items, etc., and the last shop is a market. The market has a variety of locally made items, kitchen items, and hard to find healthy food products. Starting in March, they will have a farmer's market as well. Very friendly and helpful staff as well.”

This visit wasn’t just about food—it was about paying attention.
Pulling into the parking lot, the first thing that showed up was the smell. Not subtle, not neutral—heavy, oil-forward, loud. For some, that’s the signal to go in. For others, that’s enough information to pause. That moment matters.
Inside, the setup is clear: hot case, volume cooking, fried rib tips front and center. No confusion about the identity of the place.
What I Ordered
* Spicy fried ribs (small)
* Peach cobbler
* Tea cakes
* Pecan pie (did not finish)
The Food
Spicy Fried Ribs
The ribs didn’t land for me the way the reputation suggests.
* Visually: dry, heavily breaded, small meat-to-bone ratio
* Taste (no sauce): flat, not much going on
* Taste (with sauce): improved, but more covered than elevated
The structure felt like it depended on sauce to come alive. And because they’re held in a hot case, not cooked to order, texture and moisture take a hit. That’s part of the system.
Peach Cobbler
This was solid. Warm, sweet, and actually delivered on flavor. No complaints here.
Tea Cakes
These were the standout for me. Simple, clean, and worth coming back for on their own.
Pecan Pie
Too filling-heavy for my preference. Not enough pecan presence, so I passed on it.
The Experience
Service was excellent. Friendly, welcoming, and patient. That part is real and deserves to be said.
There’s also something else worth noting: this place clearly means something to people. The reviews reflect loyalty, history, and community—not just taste. That’s part of why it’s lasted.
Final Thought
This is one of those spots where two things can be true at the same time:
* A lot of people genuinely love it
* This particular experience didn’t fully connect for me

“I had a great experience throughout the store, but the cashier kinda ruined it for me. I had to break my items up into two different orders because I needed a separate receipt for specific items. Then I had 3 items at the end that needed to be paid for with a different card. I had everything all organized and things should have gone smoothly. It did for the most part, but it was evident that she was pretty particular about how my transaction should be handled. As a cashier for the better part of 20 years, I know that cashiers are any store's last line of defense. They make or break the customer's experience. Thus was the case here; she should have just gone with the flow and done her job politely. Instead, I left the store feeling irritated and like I should be to blame for irritating her. I'm not going to type out all the details of her behavior, but even though there were a few more steps to take, the situation was not complicated and I wasn't bossy or high-maintenace about it. She, however, got a little snipity about it. With a smile, but snipity nonetheless. After all, I'm the one paying for everything and if I need to split things for a separate receipt or payment, I shouldn't be getting attitude about it.
Overall, the store was clean, well-stocked, and had a good layout. The deli associates were very nice. The restrooms were clean and well taken care of too.”
“I am a chef and shop their daily. The staff is friendly and store is clean even In construction! They have hard to find fresh herbs. Please add more dry spices by the pound. They are always out of the chicken soup mix and butchers blend black pepper. I love April in wine she’s the BEST on helping me pair my wines! It’s MY HEB! Chef Heir”

“It's small, crowded, and always busy. Parking has a lot to be desired. The cashiers are good people, fair, and upbeat. This store is popular due to its location and ease of in and out. Lots of business from south Waco. You'll like it here, it's kept clean as possible for a small space store. No attitudes from anyone (staff or customers) usually. Quality store, despite its appearance.The soda fountain is my only area of... wariness. Got a fountain drink from it only once because it tasted, well, really dirty. Other than that, it's a great little store. I always leave here happy.”
“It's so convenient, especially for my husband, who has a harder time at other grocery stores trying to find WIC approved items. I would go to them after my WIC appointments, and I was wondering how this will all play out as I'm moving quite a way away from the location and WIC office... THEY NOW HAVE A WIC OFFICE AVAILABLE IN THE STORE!!! This is the best addition ever and service; it's convenient, with an extremely kind and helpful staff. This mama bear is so grateful.”

“My only negative is so much is crammed into the store, but the staff l engaged with at the Dollar General on Franklin in Waco went OUT OF THEIR WAY to help me find what l came into the store to buy...even to the point of finding a cart for me to carry what l bought. Their attitudes were more than helpful, pleasent and courteous.I had no idea this was Dollar General...or at least at this location bc l had been to another location where l got the feeling l was almost an imposition. Here, they try harder...just as Avis car rental said they did years ago. I didn't feel like 'just' a customer!”

“This is a smaller HEB, like the ones in small towns. Sometimes I'm surprised at some of the deals. With the lack of size, the experience is too short. It's a very nostalgic experience. The only thing that could make it great is wood floors.”

“This bakery is absolutely the best!! I have been coming to Ms.Shirley for over 15yrs. I also have Katrina decorate my cakes(its been 3 yrs now) as well and when I say she do a magnificent job I'm not exaggerating!!! I love them two whole heartedly...they're so sweet & haven't disappointed me yet!! My entire family rock with these 2 ladies!!!”
“Clean Store. Very nice employees, lot of different snacks and food to choose. The store has a kitchen with homemade food Monday-Friday until 4:00 ? I'm not sure on the open time to serve food. ? The main store is open everyday for buying groceries.”
“Proteins, cheeses, farm fresh eggs, produce, sour dough bread, ice cream, toxin free candles, and everything in between. This store has it all. A lot of products come from local vendors, many of which are veteran owned. Clearly, this store was designed with the customer in mind. The staff is friendly and eager to please the customer. I'm happy to support this veteran owned store and you won't regret doing so either.”

“My car broke down in this area and the owner was very hospitable and generous enough to allow it to be parked there for several days until a wrecker could be afforded! They have everything you could want here, friendly staff, and there is also Grady's Grub food truck out back! Might I also add they do have all grades of Gas available! Stop By, grab some custom looking sun shades and a cool drink!”
“I’m so thankful that we have a grocery store in Axtell! I don’t have to travel to Bellmead if I need something that I may have forgotten to get at HEB. Example: I ran out of Tylenol for children. I was pleasantly surprised that DG Market, Axtell carried it. It saved me from traveling 11 miles to Bellmead. This market has practically all the basics and more than I expected. The staff are very hospitable and friendly. It’s a blessing and makes living in the country so much more enjoyable. Whoever came up with the idea to put a DG Market in Axtell, is a genius ☺️.”

“I just bought some pita bread and falafel to eat at home, almost stocked up on dates but I have plenty rn. I am going back for some olive oil and homemade Greek yogurt. Decent selection to not have to leave my neighborhood. Tons of spices, I hope they restock the honey.”
“Located in the back, middle of Spice Village. All the oils and vinegars can be sampled (pour in little cups or with pieces of free bread). They have a nice selection of fruity (e.g., cherry, coconut, raspberry, peach) and aged balsamics and spiced olive oils. It’s hard to tell the ingredients and where they come from, which I would like to see (website doesn’t seem to provide either).”
