Target launches its biggest store remodel in over a decade
Target is rolling out its most ambitious store overhaul in more than ten years, with plans to remodel over 130 locations and open 30 new stores across the country this year. The retailer is also putting money into supply chain technology upgrades to keep pace with how shoppers buy today.
The remodels will hit stores in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and Virginia. Shoppers walking into a refreshed Target can expect a different feel from the moment they step inside, with modern décor, specialty LED lighting and new signage that makes it faster to find what they came for.
Many remodeled stores will get an expanded dry grocery section, along with more everyday essentials and pantry staples. Some locations will also see bigger fresh and frozen food sections, putting Target in closer competition with grocery-focused rivals.

The retailer is also reworking the back end of the shopping trip. Updated spaces will support order pickup, drive up and exchanges & returns, along with smoother checkout and self-checkout lanes. Apparel, beauty and home departments are getting fresh merchandise displays to highlight what Target calls its "elevated style." Modernized restrooms and designated nursing spaces round out the guest experience.
The other part of the plan is sustainability: in select stores, Target is installing natural refrigeration systems and more efficient lighting and HVAC, which should bring down both emissions and energy costs.
The store-level work is happening as Target upgrades its assortment in health and wellness, beauty, baby, home and women's style, with curated items in expanded, dedicated spaces.

"These investments are all about making Target an even easier, more inspiring and friendly place to shop," said Laurie Mahowald, senior VP, Target Properties. "We're evolving our stores in ways that reflect how guests shop today - from more intuitive layouts to expanded assortments - while also strengthening the role our stores play in fulfillment and our long-term growth."
Target's push lands in the middle of a wider remodeling wave across big-box retail. Walmart, for one, plans to remodel more than 650 supercenters and Neighborhood Markets in 2026 and open about 20 new locations this year and into early 2027. The 2026 schedule includes 72 stores in Texas, 58 in Florida, 56 in California and 37 in North Carolina, with wider aisles, updated pharmacies and expanded pickup and delivery services among the upgrades.
