The last time I bought a car was over 10 years ago when I was in my early 20s. My dad had to come with me because I had no experience with auto purchases and my credit score wasn't up to snuff to get the best financing.

Fast forward to the middle of 2026, and I was getting ready to sell that old Honda Civic and upgrade to something newer. But to what? As someone getting ready to start a family in the next few years, I was identified that a crossover SUV would be the best fit for me. But industry equivalents such as the CR-V and RAV4 were thousands of dollars more expensive due to the success of the brand in this particular category, and these two in particular were not even made in Japan for some years and models.

This led me to the 2025 Mazda CX-5 - made in Japan, the last model of its generation, no active recalls, and competitively priced.

Ten years later and I STILL don't have any car buying experience but I have the internet at my fingertips to help me research exactly what cars I want to try prior to stepping in a dealership, how comparables are priced within the entire Socal region, and
how to use this information to help me get close to the actual price I wanted to pay.

I found four vehicles of interest at four different Mazda dealerships: Culver City, Long Beach, Huntington Beach, and Carlsbad. I test drove the models at other dealerships to ensure that I liked the cars and wanted to move forward. I really didn't have the time or interest in visiting each in person to negotiate. So, I used the contact forms on each of the dealership websites to begin negotiating with the price that I had in mind.

As to not put any particular place on blast:

One dealership wouldn't really budge on the price at all. Another one did and warranted an in-person visit. The third was just outlandishly dismissive and unprofessional with responses written in lower case and incomplete sentences.

The fourth was Veronica Paco who replied immediately and didn't waste time getting down to talking about an actual out-the-door price. Over the course of two weeks, I was talking to HB Mazda along with one other dealer and getting really close to the price where it was definitely time to buy either car before someone else got to it.

Long story short, I ended up going with Veronica because she had gotten me the best number and was transparent about no additional dealer fees and add-ons. I was only available to come in at a particular time and day.

This happened to be Veronica's day off but she met me there on time and had the car and documentation all ready to go. Veronica is a 20 year veteran of the industry and knew what she was doing: professional and accommodating, able to answer questions that I had about the vehicle, and even gave me her contact information in case I had any questions or concerns after driving off.

I spent only about 90 minutes at the dealership which I feel is quite remarkable. Veronica checked up on me several days later to see how I was doing and I absolutely loved the car. She made the auto buying process easy and transparent; in this new age where most dealerships have transitioned to email and texting in order to keep up with the times, Veronica stood out as a straight-forward and effective communicator.
