“⭐ 1 STAR but 5 stars to be on to to get seen — DISRESPECTFUL TREATMENT EVERY SINGLE TIME I honestly wish I didn’t have to write this review, but after repeatedly being treated with disrespect at Vallarta Supermarket, I feel like something needs to be said. Every time my family and I go to the deli for carne asada, we are treated as if we don’t belong there. We are repeatedly asked if we are “sure” we want the meat, in a way that makes us feel like we couldn’t possibly afford it. Then, after finally agreeing to serve us, we have experienced employees picking through the meat and giving us the least appealing pieces. It is humiliating and completely unnecessary. Today was another example. We ordered a family meal from the hot food area. The woman serving us gave us pieces that were extremely dry and looked like they had been sitting there for quite some time. We also asked for horchata. It was served without ice. We politely asked for ice, and she said yes, but never added it. When we asked again, she gave us attitude, wet the entire side of the cup, and handed it back to us without even wiping it clean. And unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated incident. Time after time, the women have been rude, while some of the men have also been disrespectful and, at times, made us uncomfortable with inappropriate behavior. What hurts the most is that we are Hispanic too. It is heartbreaking to feel looked down on by people from my own community. I was born with lighter skin and colored eyes, and I can’t help but wonder if the way we are treated has anything to do with how we look. No one should ever be made to feel inferior because of their skin tone, appearance, or how much money someone assumes they have. I hope the people responsible for creating this kind of environment realize that their actions don’t just affect a customer for a few minutes. They can make someone feel embarrassed, unwanted, and disrespected—and those feelings stay with people. And to anyone else who has experienced something similar: please don’t normalize it. Leaving an honest review isn’t being dramatic or “causing problems.” Reviews are one of the few ways customers can make companies aware of repeated behavior and hold them accountable. If you have been treated poorly, speak up respectfully and share your experience. Businesses should earn our money by treating their customers with dignity—not make us feel like we’re lucky to be served. I sincerely hope Vallarta takes these experiences seriously and does something to improve the way customers are treated.”

“I had one of those small but meaningful experiences at Whole Foods last Saturday that completely restored my faith in customer service. While I was in line, an elderly woman ahead of me was struggling to find her Amazon Prime number to receive her discount, holding up a long line in the process. The cashier, Opal, was extraordinarily patient. She didn’t rush her, didn’t sigh, and didn’t treat her like an inconvenience. Instead, she calmly walked her through how to locate the number on her phone, ensured she received the savings she was entitled to, and graciously answered multiple questions afterward. It was genuine kindness — not performative, not transactional — just respectful and thoughtful service. What made it even more special was that the manager on duty, Gina, came over to bag groceries at our line. As Opal was ringing up my order, I asked Gina if she was Opal’s manager. You could see a split-second look cross her face, as though she were bracing for a complaint. But I quickly told her that Opal had delivered exemplary customer service to the woman ahead of me. Gina was visibly relieved and appreciative when she realized it was praise. And Opal heard the whole exchange! It was such a sweet moment. In a world where people are quick to criticize and slow to compliment, this interaction truly stood out. Opal treated that customer with dignity and patience, and Gina clearly fosters a culture where that kind of service is encouraged. Whole Foods should be proud to have both of them.”

Watch for markdown items just a couple days before their expiration date and remember that the expiration date is often just a guide for freshness. The one thing that's not as good as it used to be as there are fewer checkers and more self-checkout stands. I try to avoid the self-checkout stands because I feel like I'm depriving people of employment. Also why should I be doing the work that the store is supposed to be doing for me and that is ringing up my prices.”

Walmart wants your groceries at the door before the ice cream softens. On May 29, the retailer said its 30-minute-or-less delivery had reached 33 U.S. markets, adding a wave of new cities across the Northeast. Shoppers in those areas can order from more than 100,000 items, everything from fresh produce and baby formula to pet food, electronics, cold medicine, and prescriptions. Behind the scenes, the service leans on Walmart's store network and an algorithm that factors in order size, available drivers, and distance from the store.
Trader Joe's keeps adding stores, and shoppers keep showing up. The California grocer has marked nine more locations as "opening soon," pushing its expansion into new corners of the country. The grocer also took first place in the American Customer Satisfaction Index's 2026 supermarket rankings. It has held a spot near the top of that list for years.
Target is rolling out its most ambitious store overhaul in more than ten years, with plans to remodel over 130 locations and open 30 new stores across the country this year. The retailer is also putting money into supply chain technology upgrades to keep pace with how shoppers buy today.
Kroger is spending $112 million to build two new stores and renovate 15 existing locations across central and northwest Ohio. The company calls it a "record-breaking" commitment to the region. The two new Kroger Marketplace stores will rise in Canal Winchester and Delaware, Ohio, each costing roughly $30 million to build. Kroger broke ground on the Canal Winchester location on March 19 at the southeast corner of Diley Road and Greengate Boulevard. The 118,000-square-foot store is expected to open in late fall 2026 and will create around 250 jobs.
Loblaw Companies Limited is putting serious money into its retail network this year. Canada's largest food and pharmacy retailer announced it will spend $2.4 billion in 2026 to open new stores, renovate existing locations and strengthen its supply chain. The company plans to open 70 new stores in 2026. That includes 34 Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix pharmacies and care clinics, along with 31 hard-discount No Frills and Maxi grocery stores. On top of the new openings, Loblaw will renovate another 191 stores and continue construction on a roughly 1.2 million-square-foot automated distribution center in Caledon, Ontario.
