1030 N Halsted St, ChicagoI’ve been taking my dog to Dog Hotel for 4 years now, and I can’t recommend this place more! This is the 3rd dog daycare I’ve tried in the city, and it’s the only one I trust. The staff here genuinely cares about your dog!
I not only take my dog here for daycare, but I also groom and board her here. The team is trustworthy and one of the only places in the city that has staff on site overnight. I learned many places have no one present for several hours at night! At Dog Hotel there is someone present 24/7.
The daycare hours at Dog are the best, and I won’t be taking my pup anywhere else!

Animal Advocate Pet Hospital
1061 W Jackson Blvd ste a, ChicagoWhen I recently moved to Chicago, I was unsure where to go for my new puppy. Luckily, I live very close to this vet, but I got even luckier with the amazing care from all the vets and staff! They are so friendly from start to finish, and you can tell they truly care for our pets. We were originally assigned to Dr. MacLeish (amazing), but we also saw Dr. Clay-Smith (also amazing) on short notice when my dog needed to be seen sooner. They also call a few days later to check in, which is greatly appreciated. The only slight slight grievance I have is they are so caring and busy that sometimes it is difficult to get a hold of someone on the phone. However, if you leave a voicemail or email, they get back to you the same day or the next day, which is great. Thank you for taking such good care of my pup! P.S. Please make sure you grab the itemized receipt to submit as an invoice for your pet insurance! My other vet in another state (before we moved) had an automated system to submit to the insurance company. I do wish they had that here, but it truly is so easy to create an invoice on my end and document our deductible/reimbursements.

Pet Sitting & Training

Majestic Paws Chicago
330 N Wabash Ave floor 23, ChicagoI stumbled upon Majestic Paws shortly after moving to Chicago for a job which also required me to be away from my cat (Gracie; cat tax picture included) for a week about a month after moving. They have been fantastic every time I've used them. They send pictures of each step and of your pet and it's reassuring to get daily messages about how Gracie is doing (always a bit grumpy) and seeing her food and water bowls clean and her litter box taken care of. The level of communication and transparency is also fantastic; those seem increasingly rare these days, so I value them highly.

Back To Basics Dog Training
3232 N Elston Ave, ChicagoWen and Jenn at Back to Basics were wonderful to work with. We came into our private training lessons with Jenn overwhelmed with our reactive and highly distractible Pyrenees Bobbi. Our previous training gave us a foundation for basics but was not helping us or Bobbi with her reactivity and excitement around other dogs. Jenn patiently worked with us and Bobbi and since the completion of our training Bobbi has steadily improved her calmness around other dogs and attentiveness towards us on walks. Months ago we couldn't even think about walking past another dog on the same sidewalk because Bobbi would jump at any dog she saw, not to be aggressive, but to play. She would lock onto dogs across the street and lay down which was frustrating when we were trying to walk her on a time crunch, she pulled like a freight train even with corrective harnesses, and would completely ignore us. Jenn gave us the tools to manage these issues and now we don't dread walks anymore. She is much more attentive to us, and mostly ignores dogs that are across the street or farther away, which is insane considering she used to lay down for dogs a block away from us. Jenn gave us some redirection tools that allow us to easily re-route her now when we see potential issues with other dogs arise, and we have also gotten her pulling much more under control. If Jenn and Wen were able to help us and our crazy pup, I'm confident they can help you as well!

Windy City Dog Walkers
833 W Chicago Ave #206, ChicagoWe’ve been using WCDW for several years now, and have had a great experience! Soba is leash reactive to other dogs, but her walkers have been fantastic in handling her big feelings. The team is also always so quick to respond to any questions and share any changes to the normal schedule (i.e., if our normal walker isn’t available, holiday reminders). While we’ve primarily used them for walking, they were able to help me with pet sitting when I couldn’t get Soba to boarding for a last minute trip. I could tell she was cared for the whole time via the updates and photos! Shoutout to our walker, Victoria, who is a superstar!!

Urban Tailz
2528 N Linden Pl #1, ChicagoKathryn and I can’t say enough good things about Urban Tailz, and specifically our walker, Athena. Leaving our dog, Shasta, in someone else's hands can be stressful, but Athena’s professionalism and the business's transparency put us completely at ease while we’re at work.
We especially love the detailed communication we receive every day. It’s so helpful to get real-time updates on when Athena arrives and leaves, including a GPS map of the exact route they took. The daily report—letting us know about potty breaks, how well-behaved she was, and the treats she received—is such a thoughtful touch. Plus, getting 3–5 photos after every walk is always the highlight of our workday!
We always know Shasta is in the best hands possible. If you’re looking for a reliable, tech-forward, and caring dog walking service, we can't recommend Urban Tailz enough.

Anything Is Pawzible
3358 N Pulaski Rd, ChicagoThis review is long overdue so my apologies to the team at Anything Is Pawzible. We rescued a reactive toddler Great Dane in the fall and were immediately in over our heads. He had no manners and had never been trained before. The poor guy didn't understand the expectations of him! He lived outside in his previous home due to his mischievousness. We contacted Rendy right away after searching for the best R+ trainers in Chicago. She came out for a private consult in our home to meet Scooter and do an initial evaluation. She gave us homework to do until we got into a Basic Pawzibilities class. Basic class with Lin Barrett changed Scooter's life and ours for the better. Despite being reactive to other dogs (he just wants to play all the time!) they set us up for success with barriers and challenges to work on reactivity off the bat. The class was comprehensive, very fairly priced, and gave us so many resources! Lin is a phenomenal trainer who can instantly read a situation with a dog and make suggestions that actually work. We went back for more- Lin ran Scooter's Proxy Pawzibilities class, which is basically a 3 week boot camp with twice weekly sessions, which we asked them to specifically work on dog neutrality and reactivity on leash. Lin and Scooter bonded and they are part of the family now! Over the 3 week course with weekly transfer sessions in studio, Lin has progressively helped to teach Scooter that the world exists around him and that he can exist in it in a calmer state, and more importantly taught us as dads the best ways to communicate with him and advance his training. I am a far better dog owner because of Anything is Pawzible.
In sum:
Super clean, nice facility to train in.
Excellent trainers who truly love and understand dogs.
A bonus for having rescue prices for classes
If you're wondering where to start on your dog's training journey, call Rendy and her team!

Smart Paws Chicago
4007 N Broadway, ChicagoI’ve been using Smart Paws for about a year now to watch my cats when I travel, and they’ve been great every single time. I rarely leave reviews, but this one was definitely warranted.
Scheduling drop-in visits is a breeze, and they’re always super communicative. I love that they send updates and photos every visit, so I always know what’s going on. I know it can be tough to find a company you feel comfortable trusting with your animals, but I’ve never had any hesitation with Smart Paws.
I also have to call out Gina specifically because she’s awesome to work with for scheduling and everything else. She’s incredibly responsive, always on top of things, and you can tell she genuinely cares.
If you need a pet sitter/walker, I genuinely can’t recommend the Smart Paws team enough.

Whenever I'm able to adopt in the near future, I will come here first!

elite frenchies
3115 W 26th St, ChicagoAt this point I mostly needed reassurance and clarity, and that is why I was glad I reached out again to Elite Frenchies. I asked more specific questions about what to expect when bringing a Frenchie into the home, and they answered in a way that felt calm, thoughtful, and easy to understand. It made me feel much more prepared.

New Leash On Life
4064 N Lincoln Ave #374, ChicagoCan't say enough good things about NLOL Chicago! I adopted Teddy from them 8 years ago, and to this day they still keep in touch with me and help me with any questions I might have! They are 100% volunteer run so they don't have an actual shelter facility, just their homes and their hearts. They genuinely enjoy hearing his updates and even seeing him at events over the years! If you have other pets in the home, of course they should be spayed/neutered to adopt another. That's a known fact of most reputable rescue organizations. :)

Precious Pets Almost Home
3757 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago5 Stars - Truly an Amazing Rescue!
I can’t say enough great things about this local pet rescue! From the moment I reached out, the volunteers were kind, responsive, and clearly passionate about what they do. It’s heartwarming to see how much love and care they pour into every animal, despite being a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization.
The adoption process was smooth, thoughtful, and full of support. They truly take the time to ensure each pet is going to a safe, loving home. The dedication of the team is inspiring—they work tirelessly to give these animals a second chance at life.
If you’re looking to adopt, foster, or support a rescue, I highly recommend this one.

One Tail at a Time - Adoption Center
2144 N Wood St, ChicagoOn Saturday, July 28, 2018, I headed to One Tail at a Time’s Adoption Center on Wood Street to meet a dog I’d been eyeing online, Cindi. She had arrived from Alabama about a 4 weeks earlier, was around 7 or 8 months old, and had spent the previous two weeks in a foster home. When I met her in the yard, she bounded straight over to the picnic table where I was sitting and showered me with kisses. I walked out with her at 6:05 p.m. I paid nothing because a generous donor had covered her adoption fees. Her name is now Lula, and she is and has been an absolute joy.
Shortly after saying goodbye to my second dog that previous April, I embarked on a search for my third rescue dog. After researching shelters, I decided I would only adopt from One Tail. I loved that it is a women-founded, grassroots, community-based organization that seeks to rescue rather than euthanize adoptable pets. Small, but mighty and exactly what I sought.
In January 2024, I started volunteering with One Tail. Out of all the organizations I considered, this one stood out. I’m now one of over 900 active volunteers.
After 3–4 hours of self-paced training, you can sign up for 2-hour shifts at various facilities. Most volunteer opportunities involve hanging out with dogs and cats. I do that and also write thank-you notes to donors and volunteer at events.
About 90% of the animals in One Tail’s care are in foster homes, not kennels, which gives potential adopters real insight into a dog’s personality. Many families remain in touch with the fosters long after the adoptions. If adopters are struggling to pay for food, meds, or supplies, One Tail will help through its Pet Mutual Aid Program. See the website for more details.
One Tail is LGBTQA+ friendly and does not discriminate
against potential adopters. Leases and HOA rules that place limits on pet ownership are usually the only issues that interfere with adoptions.
I could write a novel about why I love One Tail, but it all starts with Lula. If you’re thinking about adopting or volunteering, I highly recommend One Tail at a Time.

LAST KISS At Home Pet Euthanasia And Cremation Services
3674 N Elston Ave, ChicagoNothing but good things to say about this company. My 17 year old cat Vigo's health took a turn for the worse rapidly. Andy was able to fit me in right away. The Dr came to my house and was fantastic. I was skeptical on in home euthanasia but I am glad I used them. The urn and paw print turned out better than I could have imagined. 100 percent will be using them again in future
