“I came to Second Wind today hoping to buy a used fly fishing rod as a total newbie. Instead of pushing me to spend more, the owner took one look at my situation and told me the cheap Walmart rod I already had was perfect for learning the basics first. He didn’t make a sale off me, but he gave me genuine, practical advice that’ll actually help me get into the sport without wasting money.
In an industry where so many places just want to upsell, this kind of integrity and care for new anglers is incredibly refreshing. “Basically the adult version of a candy store
REI in Bozeman is dangerous for my wallet. Every time I walk in I somehow convince myself that I absolutely need another piece of outdoor gear. 😂
The staff here are consistently helpful and knowledgeable, which makes a huge difference when you’re trying to figure out what you actually need versus what just looks cool on the shelf. I’ve had employees take the time to answer questions, help me compare options, and point me toward the right gear without making me feel like I’m bothering them.
The selection is great, especially for the things you actually need living in Montana. Whether I’m getting ready for a hiking trip, camping, or just looking for something I didn’t realize I needed until I walked through the door, they usually have a pretty good chance of getting me taken care of. I’ve also had great experiences with the bike shop.
The only reason I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that I wish the Bozeman location didn’t feel so cramped and overcrowded. I may be tainted by having visited the Billings store which is massive and feels like and outdoorsman’s paradise but the Bozeman store does feel very crowded even when no one is in there.
Overall, though, this is one of those stores that feels like it belongs in Bozeman. Good people, good gear, knowledgeable staff, and everything you need to convince yourself that your next outdoor adventure requires approximately $400 more equipment than you originally planned on buying.”
