Ruffin’ It Ranch
134 CR-520, MorganvilleWhen we adopted our rescue doberman, Nico, we had no idea just how much anxiety he had or what an ongoing journey it would be to help him. He's a very sweet dog but just has so much anxiety! We’ve been working with a veterinary behaviorist to figure out the right medication and with a certified behaviorist to help us manage his daily anxiety behaviors. One of our biggest concerns became finding a place where we could safely and comfortably board Nico when needed, especially so we could visit our elderly parents when needed. We had always been able to easily board our previous dobermans, so we assumed it would be just as simple with Nico. We were wrong!
We first tried another daycare and boarding facility, starting with short daycare visits to help him acclimate. The facility was entirely indoors, even for bathroom breaks, and it was very loud. In hindsight, it really wasn't the right environment for Nico. He (and probably most dogs!) needs outdoor space, fresh air, and quiet time to decompress throughout the day. After several visits without much improvement, we tried another place that did have outdoor space, but there were too many dogs, and it was overwhelming for him. At both places, we didn’t feel there was much willingness to work with us to help Nico become more comfortable. Or maybe they just didn't know how to help.
Feeling discouraged and worried that we might never be able to board him, I desperately reached out to Ruffin’ It Ranch and explained our situation. Mike’s detailed response gave me hope, and he invited us to tour the facility. This was reassuring because neither of the other places had allowed us to tour, which had felt strange to us. My husband and I visited, asked lots of questions, and felt good about giving it a try.
We started Nico with very short daycare visits and gradually increased the time he spent there. Once he became more comfortable, we tried an overnight stay, slowly working our way up to five nights so far. Each time, he seems to adjust a little more to the routine. He’s always eager to go there, he's great at home after we pick him up, and I feel 100% confident that he’s in good hands with the staff.
One of the things that makes Ruffin’ It Ranch so good for Nico is that the dogs have individual kennels with their own indoor and outdoor spaces. He needs room to himself and the ability to take breaks when he feels overwhelmed, while still getting fresh air. The staff also takes him out to the very large outdoor play yards several times throughout the day and matches him with dogs that are a good fit for his temperament and anxiety level. They even tell me who he played with and how it went, which I really appreciate.
I don’t expect Nico will ever be a dog who loves being boarded. He’s a true Velcro dog who wants to be with me! But knowing that he’s well cared for by people who understand how to manage his anxiety gives us tremendous peace of mind. Having a pet sitter stay in our home isn’t an option, given Nico’s size and strength, the level of care he needs, and the importance of making sure he gets his medication on time. Finding Ruffin’ It Ranch has made a HUGE difference in our lives.

The staff let my friend and I sit after we finish our meals which was great to wrap up our conversation. I'd like to come to try more food since I was very happy with the experience.
