“This is a review of the new National car rental facility at the Newark airport, which opened sometime early December 2023. The lot is much bigger than the old lot, so there are a lot more car options in the Emerald Aisle and Executive Aisle than in the old facility. Returning cars seems like a much more efficient process, and the staff seemed to genuinely care about our rental experience when returning the car. I’ll be renting from National a lot more often now since this new facility makes the whole process a lot more simple and easy.”

“I had an outstanding experience with Alex at this Enterprise location. I was in and out of the location - driving away in my rental in 5 minutes tops. Alex was very knowledgeable and approachable. Even though he seemed busy when I walked in, doing paperwork and doing a walkthrough of the car took no more than 3 minutes total.I also did an after hours return, and it was much more convenient and simple than I originally expected. I dropped off my rental at 4am, and I got a confirmation email by 8am saying that my vehicle had been returned successfully with no complications.Being next to Newark Penn also makes getting back into Manhattan a lot more straightforward than other enterprise locations. All of these things make me very likely to come back to this specific Enterprise location the next time I'm looking to rent a car. “I have rented from Drivo (Newark) on several occasions now. Making reservations was extremely easy. The daily rate was extremely competitive and the cars were clean and well maintained. The staff, from the driver of the shuttle, check-in and return counter were very courteous and helpful. “I rent a car with Hertz as a package of my flight to NJ which sounds a good deal. I chose a Nissan SUV looked rather new and smell OK. Hertz is reliable on this. Only thing I am not happy with this car is, the dashboard kept showing up a message that service is past due, which gets on my nerves. But so far the driving experience is good so I didn’t bother to bring it all the way back to change to another car as it took one hour which means 2 hours for this trip which is not worth it. Oh one thing, the telephone no to ask for road side assistance takes ages (more than 15 min )for someone to answer. Reason is after fill up the petrol talking to the attendant who serviced, I need to close the window while it is still raining and the window did not roll up. I thought it is some fault with the car which I didn’t realized I need to start the car first. Silly me! But the road side service tel no. is useless. So luckily I don’t need it after figure out my silly mistake.”

“As far as airport car rental experiences go, this was actually a decent one. Car rental places tend to get a pretty bad rep in general. No one likes the low price online and up charges later, but it's the reality of the situation nearly everywhere.The Car Rental location is right off the AirTran at P3, so it was easy to get to from the NJ Trains and Amtrak. At first I only saw signs for Hertz and other larger companies, but then I saw the outdoor trailer off to the side of the lot for Thrifty. There's a shuttle bus that goes from the car rental location to Terminal A right now which is a much better option if you're coming back from Terminal A or need to get to Terminal A. There's AirTran access there as well, but the path is long and confusing without the shuttle.What caught me off guard at the counter was that I didn't know I'd reserved an ELECTRIC SUV. It was a good deal online at $65 for a busy holiday weekend, when everything else was $125, so I wasn't looking at details as much as I should have, but that's my own fault. It still was a better deal than some of the alternative options for transit being considered.Thankfully I was familiar with the locations I'd be in as well as what their distance was, and what resources were there, so I knew my travels weren't going to exceed the charge of the car when I asked about it, but it led to some unexpected charges and planning that would need to be considered.The vehicle was a Kia Niro and the fully charged range on the battery was around 230 miles... but really more like 200 miles since it would need to be returned with some charge remaining, and other things like air conditioning and idle time can have an impact on mileage. Since I knew I wouldn't have a place to fully charge the vehicle overnight or for 5-6hrs before returning, the fee to return the vehicle with a low charge was $35. This is still half the cost of a full tank of gas, but something unanticipated about an electric vehicle rental.The other expense to consider aside from insurance coverage options was the EZ Pass. $25 for the EZ Pass, or go without it and be charged $10 plus toll fee without EZ Pass. If you know what bridges and routes you'll be taking, you can do some math about how much the tolls will be, but if you don't know or end up accidentally going in and out of certain tunnels, this cost can add up either way you slice it. The battery range was enough to make it into the Hudson Valley to Bear Mountain and run some errands in the city that were less accessible by trains and still get it back with plenty of remaining charge. Unfortunately my route only had one opportunity to park the car for any extended time with an EV charging station nearby, and one side of the charging station was broken while the other side was in use, so I wouldn't have been able to charge up even when I had access to a charging station. Considering it was my first experience renting from Thrifty at Newark AND renting an electric vehicle without access to any overnight charging stations, I'd say it all went very smoothly. I did need to spend some time learning what some of the EV features were from the manual, since it's all brand new to me, but thankfully the manual was in the glove box and in analog form to help me make the most out of some unique EV features.”
