In an era where most people in customer-facing roles behave like poorly programmed robots, these two offer genuinely humanized service: they listen, they problem-solve, and they treat you like a person rather than a ticket number. Every visit, they've gone out of their way to help me, and they do it with patience and real warmth.
Which makes it all the more frustrating that BMO's technology holds them back from doing their jobs even better.
The systems are visibly outdated. I regularly have to physically go into a branch to resolve things that should take thirty seconds online. Basic documents (a void cheque for my corporate account small business, for example) still can't be issued through the app or desktop banking. When the staff need to reach the compliance team to clear routine bureaucracy, they're left waiting on hold for absurd amounts of time, with the customer sitting across from them watching the clock. The branch even has a landline phone, the kind I remember from my parents' house as a kid.
We're in 2026. BMO appears to be operating on 2006 infrastructure, and the people paying the price are the employees who have to work around it and the customers who lose their afternoons to it.
Amin and Marilene deserve better tools. Perhaps Canadian banking as a whole would benefit from more competition beyond the current oligopoly. The incumbents have had little reason to modernize.
Five stars for the people. The institution has work to do. Peace :)”
