Went for my VA inspection last week and failed due to rust on both rear rotors. The place that failed my inspection quoted me $650 to replace the rear rotors that day. That felt... high.
I did some research and Blue Nile came up as a reputable, well reviewed mechanic. I called and asked if they would install parts if I supplied them, and they said they would and quoted me $140 for the work.
To find and buy the parts, I used Rock Auto, an online parts distributor. Their website is pretty simple; asked for my make, model, and year, then gave me a list to choose from. Took about five minutes to find and order what I needed.
Called back and let them know the parts were expected to arrive Wednesday, guy on the phone told me to call the day before I come in.
Took me maybe 20 minutes to call, go find and order parts, and call back.
Shipment came in a few days later, I called and let Blue Nile know I was coming in the next day. Was told to show up at 9 AM. Arrived 9 AM the next day with the shipment box in my passenger side seat, went into the office, filled out a sheet with some basic contact information and handed my key over.
Was told 1-2 hours, so I walked over the the nearby shopping center. About 45 minutes later they called me and told me they were having trouble getting the lock nuts off and they would need to either not do the replacement or break them off. I asked how much it would be to remove them and was told it cost nothing and the nuts are a few dollars for each. I said to go ahead and break them off, do the replacement.
About an hour later it was done. They didn't charge me for the nuts or the additional service. I paid, got the keys, and was off. Went back to get a reinspection and passed without issue.
I liked that they were willing to install parts I provided myself. I'm sure they would have been fair on a quote if they procured them, but I like not having to worry about it. Did good work and saved me $440. Blue Nile is my personal recommendation for now.”
