“It is clean, roomy, and has a super comfortable bed. The downside? It is $560 per night during UC Berkeley’s graduation time. Also, the surrounding area is kind of sketchy, with homeless people hanging around and trashing the front parking lot of the 7/11 store across the street. The hotel door doesn’t open as you walk in. You either have to use your room key to tap in or you have to push a buzzer to alert the person at the front desk to let you in. It is possible to take the bus (#51B) which is right in front of the hotel to go to the campus stadium for the graduation commencement. And there are fresh orchid lei sellers selling them at $45 or $55 each just outside the stadium’s entrance. No need to order them from Ashby Flower for $82.69 each (with delivery). Bus is $2.50 each way using the clipper card or $6.70 by the Tesla robotaxi from Cafe Etoile (near Trader’s Joe) to Wright House near the stadium.”

“The Berkeley City Club is a gorgeous building, designed by Julia Morgan in 1929. The building is also a listed historical place so there is tremendous history. It has a gothic feel with vaulted ceilings, Corinthian columns and lots of stones, stairs and stained glass windows. Picture a monastery converted to a hotel. The meeting/event rooms are beautiful with fireplaces. I booked a double/queen room which is on the small side, no AC, nice sizeable bathroom with lovely tiles. I had breakfast and lunch in Julia, the breakfast is included and continental. Lunch in Julia offered a French California inspired menu. Quite good. It was busy during lunch as the BCC is opened to members and has ongoing events, etc.. The dining room staff were great, super helpful and nice.

What was not so good: The rooms are a bit small, no work desk available. The room does not have AC so summertime can be unbearable. The wi fi is really bad. There is no water offered, no kettle or mini fridge either. For first time visits, the front door is a bit confusing as you have to push a button and speak to someone to get in.”

“Exactly what I needed. Great location for my activities in the Berkeley/Oakland/Richmond area. Clean, quiet, updated room; clean bathroom; mini frig. New or updated hotel. Hot breakfast included with great variety. Good price. Accommodated a very early check in. Everything you expect at a Holiday Inn but hard to find elsewhere.”

“This hotel is improving. It's location is not great, and the street and parking lot are concerning, but the interiors of the rooms are clean, everything works, the bathrooms and electrical have been recently upgraded, and receptionist was very warm and generous. The rooms are large and beds are comfortable. There are also small touches that show the staff cares. There are few amenities outside of the rooms themselves.”

“Had a 1 night stay recently with the husband and this hotel is so charming and filled with character. The owner is absolutely darling! It's in a nice location and there's a small parking lot which was a huge selling point for us. Berkeley Inn was perfect for our stay and totally affordable. Thank you for having us!”

“I recently stayed at The Claremont Hotel, and while the property itself is stunning, the standout highlight of my visit was undoubtedly Effie at the front desk.

From the moment I walked through the doors, Effie greeted me with a level of warmth and professionalism that is rare to find. She didn't just check me in; she made me feel truly welcome. She has an incredible ability to balance efficiency with a genuine, personal touch—navigating my questions with ease and offering local recommendations that turned out to be the highlights of my trip.
What impressed me most was her attention to detail. She anticipated my needs before I even had to ask, ensuring every aspect of my stay was seamless. It’s clear that Effie takes immense pride in her work and cares deeply about the guest experience.

If you’re visiting The Claremont, you’re in excellent hands with Effie. She is a true asset to the hotel and a masterclass in hospitality!”

“Very convenient location - close to downtown and grocery is right next door. Staff super helpful and kind. Room is clean and quiet. Bistro on the first floor is nice for a morning coffee and pastries. Beware though there's no parking for this hotel.”

“D Recent place for working out in downtown Berkeley. The place is clean and clear. But they removed a lot of equipment recently to clear out for more room. There used to be lots of squatting areas.
The pool is a bit small and worn out. Usually crowded.
The smell is not bad.
Service is swift and prompt.
They have bike rack for members.”
