Fins & Fangs
56460 29 Palms Hwy, Yucca ValleyAbsolutely impressed with this place. I bought the healthiest feeder fish I have ever bought from them. Both people holding down the fort were very helpful and talkative. They didn't mind us being looky-lous and asking about animals in the store. Skip the box stores. Come here for your fish and reptile needs!!!

Pet Care

Companion Animal Clinic
7332 Pioneertown Rd, Yucca ValleyI've been taking my fur babies to Companion Animal Clinic for years. I know they will take good care of my dogs. It does cost a little extra, but you get what you pay for. ? There is one rude, condescending, entitled tech that works there, but I won't let her stop me from giving 5 stars to the 99% of the others that are most excellent!

La Copine
848 Old Woman Springs Rd, Yucca ValleyLa Copine is fresh and inventive - and just plain great food and great service! It's always a great experience (and they're also very dog friendly too!)
Reservations are recommended and be specific if you want to sit inside/outside. And be patient! It's a smallish space and can be a long wait sometimes but it is SO worth it.
ps can't wait for the cookbook!

$5 Pizza Place
282 Old Woman Springs Rd, Yucca ValleyBear with me, dear reader, for this is not so much a review as it is a story. My wife and I arrived at our AirBNB quite late. Deciding to put off our mandatory trip to Vons until the morning, we figured we'd order pizza. I'm gluten-intolerant. Last year, we'd found an amazing pizza parlor on Old Woman Springs with gluten-free pizza better than anything available in Los Angeles. If only I could remember the name... Some quick Googling and I found it: Giant Rock Meeting Room. I ordered two pies and a salad, and we were off to the races. Well, that's not entirely true. The first time I tried to call in the order, a man identifying himself as Chris asked I could just hold on for a moment. I listened to him banging pots and pans around for about ten minutes before I gave up and tried again. This time, he took my order--crankily, I might add. When I asked to make an adjustment to one of their standard pies, he sighed heavily and said, "Fine, I'll just have to start the order over AGAIN." Though I wasn't privy to what caused him to start the order over the first time, I didn't want to risk an extra helping of saliva in my food, so I told him to forget it and just put in the order: two gluten-free pizzas and a "Secret Salad" -- mixed greens, black olive, artichoke heart, cherry tomato, feta, roasted almonds, tahini dressing. Yum! "That'll be ready in an hour and 15 minutes." An hour and 15 minutes?? I don't think I've ever been given a longer wait time for takeout. But I figured it was a good sign. This place is in such high demand, they've got a backlog! I kicked around for an hour, then drove down to Giant Rock Meeting Room. I first realized I'd made an error when I passed the gas station behind which the pizza place I THOUGHT I'd called is nestled. Oops--guess I called the wrong spot. No matter--with that hour and 15 minute wait, it must be the best! I walked into this small establishment to find it nearly empty. In fact, there were more people behind the counter than there were dining. An hour and 15 minutes? Well, I guess time flies when you're making bomb-ass food. My expectations were further heightened when I was handed a bill for $80. I thought, that seems kind of high for two pizzas and a salad--it must be seriously gourmet! I paid the bill and tipped generously. Then I grabbed my food. As the weight of two boxes left the counter, I knew something was wrong. The boxes were too light. In fact, they were so light, my first thought was that they'd forgotten to put the pies in. Not wanting to make a scene, I thanked them politely and stepped out to my car. That's when I opened the boxes. Now I knew why the boxes weighed only as much as the cardboard they were made from. The pizzas were ALSO made of cardboard. (See first photo.) I did the math. The salad was $17. $80 minus $17 is $63. That means that each of these pathetic, tiny, flat little personal pizzas was $31.50 plus tax. I thought about going back into the restaurant to ask for a refund, but I didn't want to be THAT GUY. Driving back to our house, I once again saw the pizza parlor that I thought I'd ordered from--$5 Pizza, the one behind the gas station. Screw it. I cranked the wheel, made a hard left, and dashed into a parking space. I'd be damned if, after all this time (an hour and 15 minutes??), I was going to show up with this roadkill. I was greeted warmly by an employee who clearly loved his job. Wanting someone to commiserate with, I explained what had happened--that I'd just spent $90 (including tip) on two slices of burlap with cheese and a couple of mushrooms. The owner came out of the kitchen, having overheard. "Can I see them?" he asked, excited. I took them both to my car and opened the boxes. "Are you kidding me? $80? For THAT?" The owner looked at me compassionately. "I'll tell you what," he said. "I'll trade you. You give me those, and I'll make you two pizzas on the house.

Frontier Café
55844 29 Palms Hwy, Yucca ValleyLoved this quaint little cafe! Recently stopped in with a group of friends (new to the area), and we were all very impressed with the menu options. Prices in California in general are higher than our Midwest norms, and this cafe was no exception- but it was worth every penny. I ordered the grilled cheese (added avocado), a hot peppermint tea, and a couple immunity and vitamin C shots. Laidback, cool atmosphere- overall great experience! Captured one pic of a friend’s egg sandwich (below).
