171 Winthrop Rd, Deep RiverWe called at 12:15 on Christmas Eve because our dog cracked her nail and it was in a spot we were concerned wouldn't stop bleeding. They were finishing up a patient and closing soon because of thr holiday but they still let us come in. They were able to sedate our dog, remove the nail and get us medication and out the door in less than an hour. We are so thankful they stayed a little late to help us as upon driving by the emergency vet in Middletown on the way to a family gathering a few hours later we saw a packed parking lot and I know we would have been there literally all day and night if we had to go there. I know the bill would have been at least double there as well.

We took the Perfect Family Dog Course 1 and 2 and walked away with such a better understanding of our dog, her behaviors and how to work with her as a team. HIGH NINE Brewing
6 Winter Ave suite 7, Deep RiverThis review is a part of my quest of visiting all CT breweries. I never tried beers from High Nine before and this was my first visit to the brewery.
The brewery occupies its own one-story building. The indoors consists of one big room with no separation. I suspect that they have an outdoor area as well, but the side of the building was covered in snow, so it's hard to guess. The brewery has events going on - there was a concert during my visit. No food is available except snacks. The space has a shuffleboard, a foosball and a couple of pinball machines. The atmosphere is nice, I enjoyed my time inside.
The beers are the main reason to visit. There were not many beers available on tap when I was there - just about 7, but those brews were something. You can order a flight of 4 in a fancy holder to try more beers. While all the beers were pretty good, I have to call out two of them: Kingsfoil (Flanders Red Ale) and Orc Blood (Adambier). These are exceedingly rare styles, I've never seen Adambier in any of other breweries I've been two. And both these beers are unique, offering something in between a beer and a wine. They both have deep taste with complex layered fruity notes.
Overall, this is a great place. If you like rare styles or just want to try something new - then this is definitely a perfect destination for you.

Whistle Stop Cafe
108 Main St, Deep RiverVisited this cafe for breakfast during a trip through CT. On the morning we visited they were extremely short staffed due to staff having to call out, leaving only one woman (I think Madeline?) to prep and cook all of the meals for the entire full house of guests. I am made of much softer stuff than she because I would have walked out crying, but she entered some kind of wonder woman culinary flow state and rode the chaos. It was fascinating to watch, and the food was absolutely delicious. We got the Glasgow omelet and the berry stuffed French toast. If we're ever back in this area we will definitely come back for another breakfast!
