“Despite the bright panels on the outside, Irma Freeman Center for the Imagination is in many ways a blink-and-you'll-miss-it kind of place. Even after having been past it on foot several times, I often had fairly little idea what it was. My first impression was that it might be a community center for disabled or destitute youths, and therefore somewhere that serves a valuable cultural function but in which I have no place. I was very incorrect in this assumption, as I found out later. One day, while the doors were open, I walked in. I was treated to a private, minimalistic indie gallery featuring work by local artists. At the time, the exhibit focused principally on abandoned sites in the Pittsburgh area, with photographs giving an eerie portrait of the region's history. It was as though the photographers were archaeologists documenting recent times that have fallen into obscurity and ruin. This is of course not the only exhibit: Irma Freeman's collections, ever changing, deal with a number of different artists and themes. Gift shop at the front door and opening night receptions every First Friday of the month. Strongly recommend!”

“Fantastic! So much to see. The homeowners are very welcoming and enthusiastic to share their love of all things taxidermy and odd. My teenage nieces absolutely loved it. Potential issues are parking and the stairs; street parking only, as it is their place of residence and the stairs from the street to the Manor are steep. Reminder: visiting is by appointment only and please give a donation. It's worth thr visit! Thank you for a great evening!”

The person that was there greeted us and just let us look around which is my ideal way to shop, let me know you're there but let me see what draws me in. I ended up selecting a perfume oil and a perfume spray which I immediately loved, along with some stickers. We got into a conversation around niche perfumes and introduced me to another brand I am so excited to try. We came from FL for a concert and I am very happy this ended up being something my husband and I made time for.”

“I went on a whim, seeing it advertised and knowing one of the artists whose work is on display. Parking is paid parallel parking on the street. I was greeted so warmly by Paul, the director, and the owner, James. Paul kindly took time out of his day to escort me around this lovely venue. He said it used to be a stable. Exposed brick and ceiling beams adorn one particular room. And the courtyard is so inviting. I did end up purchasing art by the artist I knew. Ya gotta do whatcha gotta do when a piece speaks to you.”

Recently had the opportunity to exhibit my painting piece Luminescent Tides here as part of the Iridescent exhibition and really enjoyed the experience. “This is a unique gallery space that supports DIY artists and their projects. It is a small venue, but it's cozy and well lit. There is space available for a wide variety of mixed-media projects. We enjoyed our visit here although it can easily get crowded. There is street parking available although spots are limited. I would recommend taking public transit or rideshare to get here. In general this is a space worth supporting if you care about grassroots art.”

“Maser Galleries was honestly one of the highlights of my Pittsburgh trip. Brenda and the staff are so warm and welcoming, it feels nothing like a stuffy gallery. The artwork across both floors is stunning and I walked away with a beautiful plate I’m still obsessed with. They had several versions of the same design in different hues and textures which I loved. If you’re on Walnut Street, don’t skip this one!”
