Pet Care

Bandera Veterinary Clinic PC
1989 TX-16, BanderaWe have been using this vet clinic for years. It's a good, clean, newly remodeled facility with good doctors. It's convenient and has plenty of parking. It's a little busy, so be sure to schedule routine appointments in advance.

Bandera Hill Country Vet Hospital
1413 TX-173, BanderaDr. Nightingale and colleagues have provided exceptional service to my hounds for close to five years now. I have never had another vet who was so accessible whenever emergency strikes -- which somehow never seems to happen during regular business hours. I also admire him for taking care of the hardest tasks on his own, unlike other vets who refer to pet poison control or an emergency clinic. But perhaps best of all, he has diagnosed problems that other vets couldn't, and helped keep them from recurring via a focus on diet and lifestyle. Well worth the drive from the city to patronize this first-rate practice.

Pet Sitting & Training

Total Dog- San Antonio
130 TX-173 #1805, BanderaI want to give a serious nuts and bolts review on Total Dog and Brice, the owner.
I first started working with them before the pandemic, where they helped me train my first service dog.
We would meet once a week for an hour, and he would basically teach me how to train the dog. We would go home and practice what we were taught, and the next week we would review and learn something new.
This not only taught me how to train the dog, but also helped to strengthen the bond between myself and my dog.
Fast forward to this year. My service dog was forced to retire early due to arthritis. Through Brice's instructions, I was able to find a suitable candidate for a replacement, and he even talked me into a breed I had heard about before, but only as military working dog: the Belgium Malinois.
I was concerned about it, but he was right to do so. He knew my personality and lifestyle, and knew it would be a perfect match for me.
We began training in January this year for public access and service dog tasks. We learned several PTSD related tasks, as well as scent detection and mobility tasks.
Whenever there was something I couldn't figure out, Brice sat me down and explained it to me more and helped me figure out the issues. Thanks to his careful and clear instruction, we were able to get the tasks down pat.
My Achilles is now a service dog with his K9 Good Citizen Certificate, and has been proofed with 3 tasks. We are also continuing to train to improve on a couple mobility tasks, and to teach him to get me help in the event of an emergency. (With my disabilities I'm in the ER a LOT.)
Brice is an amazing trainer, with lots of experience to bring to the table. He can help you in selecting an animal, as well as training them.
Whether you are looking to just teach basic obedience or the complex work of advanced training, Brice is your man.
Just keep in mind, owning a dog and training it is a LOT of work. If you aren't willing to commit, your dog will take advantage of you and be your leader. However, if you can commit to training your dog at least three times a day, listen to the instructions you are given, and staying consistent you will have a dog that people always compliment.

Bandera Brewery
3540 TX-16 S, BanderaWhat a great place. The beer and seltzer were amazing. And trivia was going on, which made for a fun atmosphere. Bar tenders were friendly and helpful. We each enjoyed a flight, and "the Piggie Doggies" (a fun group playing trivia) bought us a flight as well. Just passing through as we travel from our home state of New Hampshire to Big Bend. This brewery was listed on Harvest Hosts, so we made it our stop for tge night. We will definitely stop in again next trip! And the Philly Cheese Steak from Jimmy's Burgers next door was excellent!

Trail Boss Steak and Grill
313 11th St, BanderaWant a steak? Yes please! The 10 oz sirloin was awesome!!! It comes with a salad and loaded mash potatoes. Wasn't too sure about the mash potatoes. I believe it's because they were yellow potatoes which are a little watery and have a little different taste. Hubby had the ribeye and there were no complaints. He said the same thing about the mash potatoes. Dessert was key lime cheesecake and blueberry clobber cheesecake. Again nothing to tell mom about. It was ok. Service and ambiance were on point.

China Bowl
1203 Pecan St, BanderaGood food but the server wasn't really paying attention. I asked for regular hot tea and got iced tea. The restaurant could use a makeover but it's still decent.

Mi Pueblo
706 Main St, BanderaVery reasonable mexican food. I had the Banderas enchiladas and it was great. Good quality meat, cooked perfect with the usual rice and beans all very good. There are a billion Mexican resteraunts in Texas and this one is definitely above average. I have had better but a lot more that were far worse. Just above average good food, good service at a reasonable price.
