New England Dog Biscuit Company
7 Central St, SalemMy fussy little dog has kidney disease so I went in search of treats for his new condition. They bake their own there, that have no concerning ingredients, and offer a sample to try. He loved them, went home with 2 bags.

It's Raining Pets Inc
3 Bridge St, SalemMy pup escaped our yard and animal control brought him to It's Raining Pets (likely knowing how much he'd be loved). Brenda spent the whole time with him like he was her own. She even came in on her day off so I could retrieve him. I couldn't be more appreciative!

PetSmart
10 Traders Way, SalemI have had a couple of great experiences shoping and checking out at the Salem PetSmart. I have had difficulty adding the online coupons to my PetSmart account, but one of their cashiers named Rob has been very helpful in applying those discounts for me.

Pet Care

Hawthorne Animal Health Care
120 Canal St, SalemWe took our cat to them for a second opinion. The previous vet had told us the only option was to do an extremely invasive procedure. Dr. Friedman solved the problem with a simple X-ray! We're changing over to them for sure!

Everyone we met was incredible nice and thoughtful with our questions for our dogs. Couldn’t recommend this place enough and if we lived here they would be our go to Vet. Thanks so much

Pet-Friendly Restaurants

Turner's Seafood at Lyceum Hall -Salem
43 Church St, SalemThis restaurant was recommended by everyone from tour guides, hotel staff, the general public, and other tourists. We were quoted a 40 minute wait, waited exactly 40 minutes, and it was worth every minute. The service was so fast that I’m pretty sure the wait staff didn’t lose speed as they dropped off food. It was some of the most delicious food we had in Salem, and the seafood was perfection. Our waitress Amy met every need, and I would definitely both recommend and go back given the chance!

Goodnight Fatty
1 Washington Square, SalemI went with my omni husband and asked if they had a vegan cookie despite the menu showing none. To my surprise they did, so try asking if you ever stop by! It was a chocolate chip cookie with oreos on the top. I also got the hot apple cider, make sure to specify no caramel sauce! Updated from previous review on 2025-11-01

60 Washington St, SalemWhat a darling little treasure of a restaurant! The space is small but the service is friendly and helpful, the food is great, and you can’t go wrong with melty cheese! Crispy fries with the right proportion of aioli and cheese, heavenly French onion soup, tasty paninis, and great coffee. Brew Box on Essex
131-2 Essex St, SalemDuring my trip to Salem this was one of the coffee shops in the area that wasn't swarming with witchy tourist, which was a pleasant surprise. We were looking for a pick me up at the halfway point of our tour through the city and I finally decided to be brave and try out the polar seltzer ades (lemonade seltzers - non alcoholic). The strawberry flavor I had was surprisingly good, so now I finally have a seltzer that I like! My friend in the spirit of it being fall got her PSL, which she really enjoyed. The Brew Box team was super quick with churning out her drink order along with some of the other people that had ordered ahead of us. I also really loved the beautiful mural on the wall when you walk in! If you're in Salem definitely skip the more hokey and themed cafes and stop in at the Brew Box!

PALS Animal Life Savers
10 Traders Way, SalemI want to share a somewhat ugly experience I had with Pals. Earlier this year, I adopted my cat Tony with a clean bill of health from just a week earlier from a vet in Salem. Shortly after adopting him, he fell ill from some unknown cause.
After about $8,000 of veterinary diagnostics and hospital stays, my vet ran two tests that he had allegedly tested negative for just a few weeks earlier: FIV and FELV. He came up positive for both. We tried many treatments but his disease was quite late stage. Unfortunately, after only a couple months with Tony, we had to put him down.
I later contacted the Salem vet to let them know their FIV and FELV tests had contradictory results just a couple weeks after. But there was a problem - they never ran FIV/FELV tests on Tony. Despite the paperwork from Pals indicated that he tested negative at that vet, on that day.
At the very best, this is a critical administrative error by Pals that resulted in a huge emotional and financial toll. At the very worst, this could be a deliberate misrepresentation of the health of one of their animals, for who knows what reason.
I have since contacted Pals on multiple occasions asking for an explanation, and despite being promised a returned call, I have not received one.
I would encourage anyone adopting from Pals to scrutinize the veterinary records, including independently verifying with the vet on file. If there is a systemic issue of improper recording of diagnostic results, there could be animals with communicable diseases that are not properly isolated from one another.

Northeast Animal Shelter
347 Highland Ave, SalemPatti and I have adopted several animals, both cats and dogs, from NE Animal Shelter over the years. They do a great job matching the pet to the owners. These people are heroes for these needy pets that cannot otherwise fend for themselves. This is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week. Consider adopting your next best friend at Northeast Animal Shelter.
