Bernhardt Winery
9043 County Rd 204, PlantersvilleHouston, Texas isn’t a city known for its wine, but there are a surprising number of wineries in and around the city. One of the better ones happens to be located about an hour northwest of downtown Houston. It’s Bernhardt Winery, a country winery.
Bernhardt Winery surprised me the first time I visited. I wasn’t expecting to find a place of this size producing wine in the greater Houston area. The facilities consist of one main building where the wine is produced, which also contains a tasting room; a large building next door that has another tasting room with a large number of seats and a stage for live performances; and even a bed and breakfast where guests can spend the night. Behind the winery, in the open space, you will find more tables and chairs outdoors with another stage for performances.
I have visited Bernhardt Winery multiple times and I have been mostly satisfied with each visit. I recommend ordering a flight of wine so that you can find the one(s) you like best. Most of them tend to be on the sweeter side and, like with any winery, there are certain to be ones you like more than others. If you get hungry, I recommend ordering a charcuterie board to enjoy with your wine. The assorted meats, cheeses, nuts, etc. match nicely with the beverages. They serve some beer at Bernhardt Winery, too.
I like what I have experienced at Bernhardt Winery and it’s cool that they also have their own vineyards to grow their own grapes. The only issue I have had at this winery is the live, outdoor events. They are usually ticketed, and if you don’t have a ticket, you will be asked to give up your seat and look for another place to sit. And it’s not always easy to find another place to sit outdoors because most of the seating, during a live event, requires a ticket. Also, for parking, there isn’t a paved lot. You need to find space in the grass for your car and then try to walk around the muddy patches as you make your way to the tasting room.
Overall, I enjoy Bernhardt Winery and I recommend it to anyone in the Houston area who likes wine and wants to support local businesses. It does take some effort to get here, from Houston, but the visit is worth it, and it ranks as my wife’s favorite Houston area winery.
