“As a dedicated online sneakerhead, I’ve rarely ventured into physical stores—mainly because DTLR locations were never conveniently located near my home. That changed recently when I needed to return an item, leading me to discover this gem of a store. The experience was nothing short of exceptional.
Upon entering, my daughter and I were warmly greeted by three enthusiastic employees. Now, this may seem like a small thing, but to me, it’s a dealbreaker. If a store can't be bothered to acknowledge my presence, I can’t be bothered to spend my hard-earned money there.
Thankfully, this wasn’t an issue at DTLR. The store manager, Rian, not only assisted with the return but also took the time to engage with my daughter, helping her navigate the latest trends with a level of expertise that only a true sneaker aficionado possesses. Rian's knowledge of both classic retros and the latest styles was impressive—this is someone who knows their kicks!
What truly stood out, though, was a situation that unfolded while we were in line to purchase my daughter’s choice, the gray New Balance 9060s. Ahead of us was a “Karen”—an entitled customer who was determined to return an item without a receipt. She was subtly rude, layering her complaints with hidden insults. Rian handled the entire situation with an almost zen-like calm, maintaining her professionalism and composure throughout what felt like an endless 20 minutes.
I was frustrated by the delay but couldn’t help feeling a sense of pride as I watched Rian navigate the interaction. As a mother raising Black daughters, I seize every opportunity to teach them about grace under pressure. Living as a Black person in America often means having to work twice as hard to be recognized, while being mindful that expressing anger can result in being unfairly judged. Rian exemplified the kind of professionalism and poise I hope to instill in my daughters.
Rian’s handling of this situation, as well as her interactions with customers of various backgrounds, was a masterclass in customer service. She treated every individual with the same respect and enthusiasm, proving that sneaker culture transcends race, size, and shape.
Because of Rian, DTLR has earned a loyal customer for life. Her professionalism hasn’t gone unnoticed, and it’s truly appreciated. Every employee should strive to reach the high standard that Rian sets.”
“My experience at Champs was great. The customer service was outstanding. I was assisted by Corey the store manager. I must admit that Corey had a trained eye for customer service. He greeted me as I walked into the store and immediately let me know that if I needed him he was ready to assist. As I looked at various shoes, picking up a few then placing the ones I didn't prefer back down, I finally saw one I liked. Corey and another associate in the store were having a conversation but Corey was very customer conceious and saw my approval for the shoes in my body language. He was able to have a conversation and saw my need. He kept his customer service eyes open. I saw this and took the time to commend him for this because those are people skills that few people have. I've worked in customer service for 30 years and Corey has the gift. Thanks Corey.”
