Pet Food Express
3868 Piedmont Ave, OaklandThe staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The location is great and there's a free parking lot for customers. Great selection of different foods/snacks for dogs/cars. There's also a wash area for dogs (you have to pay) which is clean, with lots of towels and even some free treats. The price is reasonable. You get time to shampoo, rinse and dry your dog. The water eventually gets to be lukewarm so tolerable for dogs but the air to dry them is cold.

Petvet Petfood
4814 Broadway, OaklandI come here their pet exams and my dog’s allergy shots. The shots are the cheapest I’ve found anywhere and helped my dogs a lot. I’ve also come in when I need my dogs checked out for a reason and they’ve always provided good exams. The people are nice. If you go plan to stay awhile. Make sure you come in the morning as there is a limited amount of numbers for exams, so the early bird gets the early worm.

Broadway Grooming Clinic & school
1004 Jefferson St, OaklandI had this epiphany one day, and I realized that I wanted to learn how to groom dogs! I have always been an animal lover, especially dogs. I did a quick search and I found that there is a pet grooming school right here in my hometown, Oakland, CA.
My husband and I went down to meet Alfonso, and it was very easy to tell that he comes with a lot of knowledge and experience. My long term goal is to open up my own mobile dog grooming service, and Alfonso explained (as well in great detail about the program) that it would take roughly 3 months to receive my certificate.
It was really fun to come to class on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 11:00 - 2:00pm. During classes, Alfonso's clients would bring in their dogs and as students, it would hands on for grooming the dogs. Sometimes, it could a little tough, like clipping there nails, or trimming their adorable faces if the wiggled a lot. As I (we, as in my fellow students) gained more confidence, we would rotate on services, like bathing, trimming, clipping, combing, brushing, cleaning ears, etc.
Every dog has their own unique personality, but it was always fun and exciting each class. Alfonso's school is fantastic, and he is very easy to get along with. You will not be disappointed if you sign up for the program.

SpaGo Dog
4900 Broadway, OaklandMy wife and I have been taking our Shih Tzu to SpaGo for a while now. The owner Miki does a good job.
They are so popular that they're by appointment only, but it's pretty easy to call in and setup appointments.
We've also taken our Poodle Pomeranian Mix to SpaGo, but lately we trim his hair ourselves. For our Shih Tzu Hansyn, especially since his hair grows pretty quickly and gets curly as it gets longer, we take him in maybe every six weeks.
Miki and SpaGo do a good job!

They keep me informed of the care they give to my dogs, and i totally trust their judgement and decisions. OakVet Animal Specialty Hospital
1133 7th St, OaklandWe had Dr. Sawyer as our oncologist for our senior dog. She was able to walk us through our different treatment options effectively, and was always available for questions throughout the treatment period. We never felt pressure or guilt to choose one treatment over another. Even though our pup passed after 3 months of treatment, we’re thankful that she got the best treatment she could have to manager her discomfort and pain. We will always be grateful for Dr. Sawyer’s empathy and guidance.

Claremont Veterinary Hospital
5331 College Ave, OaklandI've been taking my dog to Claremont Vet since I adopted him five years ago. He is a pup with a lot of medical issues and health challenges, and has been to Claremont Vet at least a dozen times (maybe even close to two dozen) for both urgent care and regular visits. We've most often seen Dr. MacDonald (who we love) but have seen all the providers at one point or another. The staff are so compassionate, professional, and helpful. The doctors are exceptional with their knowledge, care towards my pup, and their patience with my questions. I always feel like my pup (and myself!) are in excellent hands with the team. And I love that I'm supporting a woman owned small businesses. I've had to take my pup in to ER vets elsewhere a few times and (understanding there's a vet shortage and everyone in the field is worked to the bone), I have always walked away feeling so grateful that Claremont Vet is my primary provider and offers such great care. I could not recommend Claremont Vet more and I will certainly bring future pets here.

The Cheshire Cat Clinic
4232 Park Blvd, OaklandI love Cheshire Cat Clinic and their amazing staff! I’ve been bringing my two cats here for six years, and they have always received compassionate, individualized care.
In 2024, Dr. Atid and her team truly saved my cat’s life. An emergency vet misdiagnosed him with a broken jaw and I was facing a heartbreaking decision. I didn’t want to give up, so I went in for a third opinion from Dr. Atid. Her team took the time to look deeper and they discovered it was actually a tooth issue—a simple extraction was all he needed.
Their care, dedication, and willingness to go above and beyond made all the difference. I am forever grateful. I wholeheartedly trust them and recommend them to anyone looking for caring and knowledgeable veterinary professionals.

Happy Hound Play & Daycare, Inc.
2101 Mandela Pkwy, OaklandI really like Happy Hound! The staff is amazing. They're always courteous, nice, helpful and willing to help. They know my dog's name and my dog absolutely loves going there.
The facility is pretty big and there are separate areas for dogs depending on their size. They also have cameras in all the public areas where the dogs play/rest and if you log in from home/work, you can see what your dog is up to.
They're also very good at sending messages for nonemergency matters. For example, they notify you if your dog has diarrhea. If anything else happens like an altercation between dogs, they'll call you and tell you if your dog got a scratch etc.
Their weekday hours are good (7pm to 7pm). Unfortunately the weekend hours not so much. I haven't left my dog overnight but have not heard negative comments about it.
It is a bit pricey but worth it. They have different packages depending on your needs
The reason I'm giving Happy Hound 4 out of 5 stars is that more often than not, the facilities have a strong smell and my dog comes home smelling bad. I cannot describe the smell well but I imagine it is smell from the accumulation of poop, pee, and lots of dogs together in one place.
But my dog loves it there so much and the staff is so amazing that I continue to take him there.

Piedmont Pet LLC
3027 Millsbrae Ave, OaklandWe are very thankful for Karen and Piedmont Pet! We have entrusted our animals to Karen for several years and have only ever had great experiences. Piedmont Pet is an excellent in-home boarding and daycare provider for small dogs. Nervous pet owners like me will appreciate the genuine care, attention to detail, and communication Karen brings to every pet care interaction. Our little 17-lb terrier mix has a few health issues and is on a special diet and meds, and needs to be in an environment where he will be handled gently. We never, ever worry with Karen! She was extremely thorough when we first started working with her, making time to ask lots of good questions and answer all of ours. She is a confident and very experienced animal lover who organizes and handles small-dog pack walks like the pro she is. We get daily photos of his adventures when our dog is with Piedmont Pet which we really, really appreciate. Karen takes care of him like one of her own (little sweaters in the winter, no-pull harnesses, comfy beds and blankets, etc.), and we can tell he feels secure and comfortable with her and his "vacation pack". His time there is a great mix of snuggles and downtime and walks and enrichment time. Karen also provides drop-in visits for our cat when we're away which we really appreciate. Our cat doesn't like anyone and she actually plays with Karen and allows pets (we get pics and videos of this too)! We feel secure knowing our sweet little dog buddy is in great hands and our less-sweet but still loved cat buddy is getting wet food and playtime when we can't be there. Strongly recommend Piedmont Pet, especially to anyone with small dogs in the East Bay in search of secure, loving home boarding or daycare!

The Natural Dog
Colton and, Gaspar Dr, OaklandWhen we were faced with the possibility of boarding our lab for over a week at one of the big nearby facilities, I was determined to find a better alternative. I wanted somewhere she could feel cozy (not stuck in a kennel for most of the day!) and get plenty of loving attention and exercise. After a few lackluster interviews with sitters I found on our town's facebook group, I got a recommendation for the Natural dog. I was immediately drawn by their pictures of their pack on hikes in hills and appreciated the quick, thorough response I got to my inquiry.
We scheduled a trial night to make sure our girl would be a good fit for an extended stay (we loved that they did this check) and I could tell right away from seeing Paul interact with her that she was going to be in good hands - he is definitely a bit of a dog whisperer.
While we were away, we got daily photo updates of her living her best life, exploring the trails and snuggling on the couch. It gave us so much peace of mind knowing she was happy and well cared for. We’ve already booked two return visits :)

Wahpepah’s Kitchen
3301 E 12th St #133, OaklandComing here for a casual lunch was a great opportunity to experience the flavors of native American foods. Located in the Fruitvale area right next to the BART station, you will need to be mindful of where you park. Since we were here on a Sunday afternoon we were able to utilize the BART lot for free. The interior is bright, simple and open space with several tables. We chose to dine outside under the giant tree covered patio. It's a nice relaxing space, and the owners do a good job of keeping the panhandlers from bothering the diners. The girls running the store on this Sunday were super sweet, attentive and helpful throughout our stay.
The four of us shared several dishes and all were really quite good. Everything was very fresh and well prepared. Know before you go... Wahpepah's Kitchen specializes in true native American cuisine. The food is simply prepared, fresh and local which means the menu may change depending upon what is available locally as the seasons change. I love that aspect, and their commitment to sourcing fresh local products.
