This review is based on attendance at several lectures by Open Paw speakers as well as direct experience with the Open Paw program and the programs founders. (BTW, while I love cats, I own 3 dogs and work with dogs on a daily basis. My bias therefore, leads me to write about dogs.) Open Paw is a multi-faceted approach to making companion pets (more) adoptable, educating pet owners (preferably before an adoption), and keeping pets in the home once they are adopted. When the Open Paw program is employed at the animal shelter level, staff, volunteers and visitors to the shelter are encouraged to feed the dogs part of their daily food ration for displaying appropriate behavior (sitting quietly instead of barking and lunging) at the front of the kennel. The dogs get lots of repetition for this appropriate behavior throughout the day and dogs that are shy or aggressive around people learn that the approach of strangers is a good thing - this is how they get their dinner! Special care is also given in the Open Paw program to teach and maintain housebreaking by ensuring that the shelter dogs get adequate time out of the kennel - housebroken dogs shouldn't be forced to soil their kennel. (In most shelter situations, the mental and physical health of the dogs is constantly deteriorating. Constant barking, lack of physical exercise and mental stimulation as well as inadequate levels of staff and volunteers to get the dogs out frequently enough - these are the ingredients for doggie stress and deterioration found in most shelters.) In and out of the shelters, Open Paw strives to educate prospective pet owners BEFORE they adopt. Far too many dogs are returned to shelters because the new owners don't have realistic expectations of their new companion and they don't know how to resolve insanely simple problems. Post-adoption, Open Paw continues its efforts to educate pet owners and handlers with the goal of keeping the new pet in the home for a lifetime. In addition to a vast amount of resources available on the website, Open Paw also offers - for free - a electronic (pdf) file of "Before You Get Your Puppy", by Dr. Ian Dunbar. (Dunbar - a very well known and respected veterinarian, animal behaviorist, dog trainer, and writer - revolutionized the dog training world when he opened "Sirius Puppy Training". He is also the founder of Open Paw.) The Open Paw program and what it strives for is nothing short of brilliant. The priceless information is appropriate for anyone who might come into contact with domesticated animals. Pet lovers, owners, the general public as well as people that don't like pets - all would benefit from OU (Open Paw University). Prices are reasonable on a scale depending on dog weight, and it's easy to get an appointment. They also sell pet food and supplies.

My Griffs have outlasted a couple generations of Campus vets, and the current crew and their cheerful support staff are worthy successors to those who came before.
Drs. Pierson and Tam have helped ease my Trixie into her matronly years, keeping under control later-life conditions like dry eye and declining mobility.
I am getting to the age when I wish the benefits of my own healthcare providers were as predictably positive as those enjoyed by my little friends. As always, we dog lovers strive to provide to our canine companions the things we cannot always get for ourselves.

2126 Haste Street, BerkeleyBerkeley Dog and Cat is a wonderful veterinarian hospital. I have been coming here for over 20 years after taking my dog to numerous other vets to find out what was wrong. They figured out her health problem right away and she went on to live a long happy life. Now I take my cat there. The vets are top notch and the front office staff are kind and welcoming.

1048 University Avenue, BerkeleyWe brought out rabbit to PETS Ophthalmology for a consultation for a recommended Enucleation.
Our rabbit was a older adult aged rabbit and we were very anxious about the anesthesia as well as the risk that enucleations have on rabbits (as the eye is close a vein that can cause bleeding out).
We saw Dr. Gleeson and her staff (Lisa) who were absolutely wonderful the entire process. I could tell from the Dr's questions, quick observations and her confidence that our bun was in good hands. The surgery was performed in tandem by Dr. Zarfoss, who we didnt get to meet but who had inspected him as well.
Both doctors were very thoughtful and caring, taking conservative approaches.
On the day of the surgery the staff kept a very close eye on him, called me throughout each part of the process, and sent me all his vitals and information for proper discharge. Overall the cost of the surgery was very fair and reasonable.
I would recommend PETs for anyone looking for excellent ophthalmology care and enucleation for buns <3

We have been the luckiest to work with Jolie for the past 9 years. It is a big deal to trust someone to take your dogs out into the world for adventures, or stay in your home and care for your dogs when you're traveling. Jolie is the absolute best we've ever worked with and we trust her completely. She is professional, genuinely loves the pups, is an excellent communicator including daily updates and photos, and is always looking out for the dogs' well-being. To illustrate how amazing Jolie is: one of our dogs had severe anxiety when she was younger, and we searched high and low for a walker who would be a good fit for us. Jolie met us for training sessions before starting walks, was incredibly patient as we continued that training, thoughtfully chose locations for walks where triggers would not be present, and showed so much love and care for our dog. Fast forward to today: our dog is a confident girl, enjoying her adventures with Jolie and happily greeting other dogs and people on her walks, and our lives are forever changed for the better ❤️ If you are looking for a dog walker or dog sitter, look no further - you are in the best hands with Jolie!!

1956 Shattuck Avenue, BerkeleyOften come here for my birthday. This place makes me overjoyed that I can really enjoy complex types of sushi again (after transitioning from pescetarian). A lot of places that serve meat sushi with vegan/vegetarian sushi options, tend to make them bland and overly simple (since it's usually something secondary to cater to have something at all for vegs). This place knows how to make them extremely rich and complex in flavor and texture, satisfying, filling and fun. There is a lot of love with these sushi. I highly recommend the Barbers, which is like playing Russian Roulette by including one random spicy sushi... if you get it, you're supposed to take the included shot of saké. But my absolute-absolute favorite is the The Wedge, the flavor and texture is absolutely amazing. This time around, also had the Sunset again (which has the fun display of fire), and Leahi (beets, vegan cream cheese and cashew sprinkles!)

The food was super tasty: we got Pad Makuer with tofu, brown rice, and a special that I think was called Choo Chee Salmon. The vegetables were all really tasty and nicely cooked, and the tofu and salmon were really good. The service is great, they were attentive and helpful--even brought a bed for our dog, and some water for her too. The outdoor seating is quiet and pleasant, not right on the street, with the additional nice element of the sound of the fountain nearby.

1918 San Pablo Ave, BerkeleyI'm giving atmosphere 4 stars even though it's more of a place you go for some of absolute best food you've ever had, and less for the ambiance. They do have a cute side patio with string lights and speakers that they have let me use when hosting friends, and that is really nice.
The food is fantastic. I always get garlic naan and chicken karahi, theirs is the best I've had. The lamb curry, lamb saag, and okra masala are all favorites, and I like the samosas with their tamarind sauce. We go here about once every week or two, it's affordable, the leftovers are good, and it saves us a night of cooking after a long day.
The owner and all others that interact with the customers are great as well, kind and helpful, and they always offer the free chicken soup and tea when we are waiting for our food.
I highly recommend!

The vibe is brought together by the fun colors throughout the shop and the cutest little ice cream lights! The customer service there was also insanely good. I came during rush hour and there were so many people ordering however, I was being asked questions and helped throughout the process. The person helping me was extremely polite and ensured that everything was going well when I was there.

This was easily my favorite item on the menu! It had multiple thin, soft layers of crepe, and the inside was packed with Oreo crumbs, cream, and so much flavor. Every bite had the perfect combination of the soft crepe, creamy filling, and Oreo crunch. I could genuinely eat this one again and again!
🍪 Biscoff Croffle
This was perfectly crunchy on the outside while still being soft and fluffy on the inside. It was topped with a generous amount of Biscoff drizzle, which gave it that sweet caramelized Biscoff flavor without being too overwhelming. The crunch + drizzle combination was SO good!
🥭 Mango Lemonade
This was genuinely so, so good! I’m not usually a fan of really sweet drinks, and especially with lemonade, it can be really easy for the sugar to become overpowering. This had a great tangy mango flavor and was super refreshing! I even gave my dad a sip once I got home and it was officially dad approved. He was a big fan of it too!
🍓 Dubai Chocolate Strawberry
This was my first time trying Dubai chocolate strawberries and it was definitely a hit! The strawberry was super fresh and juicy, with a generous layer of chocolate and that crunchy, nutty pistachio-kataifi filling that made every bite so satisfying. I loved the combination of the fresh strawberry with the rich chocolate and crunchy filling!
Overall, Scoop N Chill is such a cute spot if you’re craving something sweet, especially if you want a place where you can actually sit, relax, and enjoy your dessert. Next time I go, I'm definitely interested in also trying the gelato and the sushi crepes
