The Oyster & Thistle Restaurant & Pub
205 Washington St, La ConnerI really enjoyed my experience here. I went here hoping to get fresh oysters, cooked and not. I mean, it is part of the restaurant name. I went in and was surprised by the lack of staff. I did end up finding out while I was there that there was only one server that night for the entire restaurant. No bartender or host, and the other server for the evening had called out. This guy was hustling and doing a great job! He was definitely at a capacity for what he could personally handle at times and that's okay! It was just one dude. I did hear him at one point mention to new patrons that the restaurant was at capacity and he suggested a similarly priced restaurant a block away. I've been there too, and it was a totally reasonable suggestion. I would much rather have a server that is doing what he can handle than having too many tables and having to rush everyone. I had heard about this restaurant originally from a different business while shopping there. Their suggestion was the caesar salad and the French onion soup. I decided to try both of those and a couple more items. I ordered the salad, soup, 1/2 a dozen shucked oysters, and bread first. My salad and oysters were served first which makes sense as they are both cold. Not sure how often the bread gets ordered as it is a $6 item. They make the Caesar dressing in house. The greens were nice and fresh. It was served with an anchovy filet. I prefer my dressing with a bit more anchovy flavor, but most people probably don't. The oysters were served on a bed of ice with an frozen/iccee style (yeah that drink from childhood) mignonette. I've never had mignonette served that way and I was pleasantly surprised. The quality of the oysters was top notch. I was served the soup as a second course. I hoped to receive the bread with the soup, and that did not happen. The kitchen bakes the bread and it seems as though they weren't expecting as many customers that night. I was told I would not be receiving any bread. The soup is fantastic and anyone ordering it will enjoy it. I heard. A discussion about the preparation being a three day process. I've had French onion before which has a bit more of a beefy flavor which I prefer. Would order again. I asked whether I could order something else and asked about the pan fried oysters versus the pan fried oysters with house made fettuccine. I went with the appetizer as I just wasn't feeling the pasta. Probably next time! I was told a couple of minutes later that the kitchen was closed and I would not be receiving the oysters. I went ahead and ordered the chocolate lava cake for dessert. Surprisingly I did receive the oysters and the bread. Boy am I happy that I did! First, it got me to the point of feeling full. Second oysters were the reason why I was there. The oysters were lightly battered and pan fried. Those were the best pan fried oysters I have had in years. Crispy, light, super juicy inside. The batter and fry were perfect. The bread was a very high quality bread. Chocolate lava cake for dessert. They were out of the bread pudding which was my first choice. It's chocolate lava cake. I've had it a lot before. Not the best, not the worst. The cookie served as an accent on the desert was honestly the best part of the dessert. I would have preferred some dessert made with the cookie. Even an ice cream sandwich with the cookies, ice cream, and a fruit topping would have been a nice change from the usual chocolate lava cake. As a chocolate lover I wasn't inspired by the dessert. The restaurant itself is pleasant. Comfortable, wood accents, and relaxed. One star off for a couple of reasons. The server asked me if he could help me with anything after I seated myself at the small four seat bar. I'm obviously here for dinner, just give me a menu. The confusion about whether or not I would be receiving the items that I ordered. I'm really glad that I did receive those items! Best part of the meal. I don't think they normally have anyone sit at the bar. I was by myself and I didn'
