The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly, and it’s really cute inside, too, with the koi pond and Buddha fountain.
FYI, most of the pics here are old, from their previous location across the street. The new location is right by the giant Trader Joe’s on Fair Oaks.

David worked with Goose on learning his basic commands and took him all the way to learning how to listen off-leash after completing levels 1+2. Before Goose started, he was hyperactive and wouldn’t listen. He’s now so much more attentive, his leash manners are great, and he’s well-socialized (I can already tell he misses the playroom!) I couldn’t recommend Obedience Please more for training. Goose is such a good boy now and it’s allowed both of us so much more freedom!

Bistro De La Gare

Tucked away on a peaceful Pasadena side street, this little French bistro feels like one of those places you accidentally discover and then keep in your back pocket for special occasions.
I found it while searching for date-night ideas and took my girlfriend there on a Saturday evening. Parking was surprisingly easy, the neighborhood was quiet, and the outdoor patio ended up being the star of the evening. The inside dining room was a little lively, but outside it was just us, good weather, and a very relaxing atmosphere. If you're planning to sit outside, bring a light jacket if temperatures drop. There weren't any heat lamps going the night we visited.
The service was excellent. Our waitress was energetic, knowledgeable, and did a great job walking us through the menu and specials. She completely sold my girlfriend on the seafood pasta special before we even had a chance to order what we originally planned.
We started with the escargot, which was served in a light garlic-herb pesto sauce with bread for dipping. My girlfriend is an escargot enthusiast said it was good but had better. I had never tried it before and honestly enjoyed it more than I expected.
For dinner, my girlfriend ordered the seafood pasta special while I went with the kid's filet mignon and mashed potatoes, mostly because I knew I'd be helping finish her meal. The seafood pasta was good, but not quite the knockout we expected for the price. The filet was cooked nicely, especially with the peppercorn sauce recommendation, but it's definitely a kid's portion. No surprises there.
Then dessert happened.
We ordered this apple tart with vanilla ice cream, and suddenly everything else became background noise. This thing was ridiculous. Warm apples, caramel, flaky pastry, creamy ice cream... every bite was perfectly balanced. Not too sweet, not too heavy, just absolutely fantastic. I've had desserts all over Southern California and plenty while traveling, and this easily lands in my personal top five. It was so good we'd honestly come back just for dessert and coffee.
Now for the one downside: the pace. This was not dinner. This was an event. Our entrees took a very long time to arrive, and the meal stretched well past two hours. If you're on a first date and struggling for conversation, this may be a challenge. If you're with someone you genuinely enjoy talking to, you'll be fine.
The final bill came close to $200 after appetizers, drinks, sparkling water, entrees, dessert, and tip. It's definitely not an inexpensive night out, and I do think the value is slightly impacted by the slow pace and portion sizes.
That said, we had a wonderful evening. Great service, easy parking, a romantic atmosphere, and one of the best desserts I've had in years. For a special date night where conversation matters more than rushing through dinner, Bistro de la Gare is absolutely worth a visit.

I was pleasantly surprised by the food. I had French toast ( it was crispy on the outside and soft and creamy in the inside), scrambled eggs ( very creamy), sausage ( crunchy and had a good seasoning). I also had coffee which was very satisfying. They also have a really good kid friendly menu. My granddaughter loved the pancakes. The service was exceptional. Our server made sure we had everything we needed.

Mamma's Brick Oven Pizza & Pasta
1007 Fair Oaks Ave, South PasadenaI wanted to get out of the house, hop in the car and grab a casual bite somewhere not too far away, so I headed over to Mama’s Brick Oven Pizza in Pasadena.
Like most people who follow way too many food influencers on Instagram, I have accumulated a ridiculous number of pizza places saved on my phone. 😂 The problem is, when I'm eating by myself, I usually skip them because so many of these places don't sell pizza by the slice. I'm not ordering an entire pizza just to conduct my own little one-man pizza review.
Thankfully, Mama's sells slices.
The place itself is really cool. It's right on Fair Oaks, with a nice casual neighborhood/sports-bar feel. There's indoor and outdoor seating, big TVs for sports and alcoholic drinks. I was there around 6:30 and there was a good crowd, but it didn't feel overwhelming. I found street parking around the corner without much trouble.
For slices, they had Margherita and mushroom available when I was there, so I ordered one of each. The two slices came to a little over $11, which I thought was very reasonable considering the size.
Both came out hot, very thin, with a good crust and really nice flavor.
The Margherita was definitely my favorite. The mushroom was good too, but personally, mushrooms need a friend. Throw some sausage on there and now we're talking. 😂 I'm just not much of a mushroom-only pizza guy.
Neither slice had meat, so next time I'm definitely coming back when I can try something with sausage or another meat topping.
As for the pizza itself, I'm not Dave Portnoy, so nobody should be making investment decisions based on my pizza scoring system. But for me, I'd put it around an 8.1/10. Maybe I'm being generous, but it's my 8.1 and I'm sticking with it. 😂
Was it the greatest pizza I've ever eaten? No. Was it really tasty pizza that I'd happily come back for? Absolutely.
One little feature I really liked was the hand-washing station right near the ordering area. There's a small sink with soap and towels, so you can quickly wash your hands without having to make a trip to the restroom. Simple idea, but surprisingly convenient.
Staff was friendly, service was good, prices were reasonable, parking was easy enough, and two slices filled me up perfectly for dinner.
Overall, Mama's was exactly what I was looking for: a casual place where I could walk in by myself, grab a couple of good slices without buying an entire pie, sit down and enjoy dinner.
Good pizza, good value, cool atmosphere and friendly people. I'll definitely be back—next time, bring on the meat. 🍕😂
