Pet Stores & Supplies

The Urban Pet
1127 Fair Oaks Ave, South PasadenaGreat place to get ultra premium dog and cat food: Orijen, Acana, Ziwi Peak, etc. There’s also a great selection of leashes and collars, and treats and toys. It’s a smaller store, but the selection is carefully curated.
The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly, and it’s really cute inside, too, with the koi pond and Buddha fountain.
FYI, most of the pics here are old, from their previous location across the street. The new location is right by the giant Trader Joe’s on Fair Oaks.

Soo's Pet Salon
1830 Fremont Ave, South PasadenaVery happy we found Soo’s grooming!
They opened 6 mo ago and were very quick to respond and schedule when I needed a last minute groom.
The owners seem very kind and loving towards all the dogs there and I like that they do not keep them in cages and the facilities were very clean.
Would highly recommend giving them a try!

Obedience Please Dog Training
721 Fair Oaks Ave, South PasadenaI took my puppy, Goose, to Obedience Please and I’m so happy with the confident, well-behaved dog he’s become. David worked with Goose on learning his basic commands and took him all the way to learning how to listen off-leash after completing levels 1+2. Before Goose started, he was hyperactive and wouldn’t listen. He’s now so much more attentive, his leash manners are great, and he’s well-socialized (I can already tell he misses the playroom!) I couldn’t recommend Obedience Please more for training. Goose is such a good boy now and it’s allowed both of us so much more freedom!

Bistro De La Gare
921 Meridian Ave, South PasadenaIf you're looking for a quiet, romantic date-night spot where you can actually hear the person across from you, Bistro de la Gare might be exactly what you're looking for. Tucked away on a peaceful Pasadena side street, this little French bistro feels like one of those places you accidentally discover and then keep in your back pocket for special occasions.
I found it while searching for date-night ideas and took my girlfriend there on a Saturday evening. Parking was surprisingly easy, the neighborhood was quiet, and the outdoor patio ended up being the star of the evening. The inside dining room was a little lively, but outside it was just us, good weather, and a very relaxing atmosphere. If you're planning to sit outside, bring a light jacket if temperatures drop. There weren't any heat lamps going the night we visited.
The service was excellent. Our waitress was energetic, knowledgeable, and did a great job walking us through the menu and specials. She completely sold my girlfriend on the seafood pasta special before we even had a chance to order what we originally planned.
We started with the escargot, which was served in a light garlic-herb pesto sauce with bread for dipping. My girlfriend is an escargot enthusiast said it was good but had better. I had never tried it before and honestly enjoyed it more than I expected.
For dinner, my girlfriend ordered the seafood pasta special while I went with the kid's filet mignon and mashed potatoes, mostly because I knew I'd be helping finish her meal. The seafood pasta was good, but not quite the knockout we expected for the price. The filet was cooked nicely, especially with the peppercorn sauce recommendation, but it's definitely a kid's portion. No surprises there.
Then dessert happened.
We ordered this apple tart with vanilla ice cream, and suddenly everything else became background noise. This thing was ridiculous. Warm apples, caramel, flaky pastry, creamy ice cream... every bite was perfectly balanced. Not too sweet, not too heavy, just absolutely fantastic. I've had desserts all over Southern California and plenty while traveling, and this easily lands in my personal top five. It was so good we'd honestly come back just for dessert and coffee.
Now for the one downside: the pace. This was not dinner. This was an event. Our entrees took a very long time to arrive, and the meal stretched well past two hours. If you're on a first date and struggling for conversation, this may be a challenge. If you're with someone you genuinely enjoy talking to, you'll be fine.
The final bill came close to $200 after appetizers, drinks, sparkling water, entrees, dessert, and tip. It's definitely not an inexpensive night out, and I do think the value is slightly impacted by the slow pace and portion sizes.
That said, we had a wonderful evening. Great service, easy parking, a romantic atmosphere, and one of the best desserts I've had in years. For a special date night where conversation matters more than rushing through dinner, Bistro de la Gare is absolutely worth a visit.

Shakers
601 Fair Oaks Ave, South PasadenaI absolutely loved this place. First time there. My 5 year old nephew wanted to go so we went. All the food had great, balanced flavor. Staff was amazing. Has its own parking lot. The atmosphere was good. It has a vintage feel to it. I will definitely go back next time I visit CA.

Jones Coffee Roasters
1006 Mission St, South PasadenaLive music was really nice to see. Dimmer lighting provides pleasant ambiance. Variety of seating and a spacious floorplan. The drinks seemed like they were decent quality and reasonably priced. Food options fairly limited but pizza shop right next door. Parking was ok, I imagine it can be a little limiting on peak times

Heirloom Bakery & Cafe
807-C Meridian Ave, South PasadenaI hosted a small house concert in our living room. The music was fantastic and the people who had gathered were fascinating. All anyone talked about, however, was the key lime pie that I'd ordered from Heirloom. They're STILL talking about it.

Aro Latin
1019 Mission St, South PasadenaGreat chill place with good food and great service. They had the World cup on the TVs but the volume was down so you could carry on a conversation at a comfortable level. Will definitely go back. Plenty of parking on a week day even though it's next to the South Pass Metro station.

Fiore Market Cafe
1000 Fremont Ave, South PasadenaTheir turkey sandwich with house-baked bread is legendary for a reason. The bread is warm, salty, and slightly chewy—basically a blanket for roasted turkey. The garden patio is shaded and quiet even at lunch rush. They sell loaves to go, but they sell out, so come early. Service is relaxed but attentive

Lost Parrot Cafe
1929 Huntington Dr, South PasadenaLost Parrot Cafe is a cutesy cafe in Pasadena serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner! They offer coffee and alcohol which is always a plus in my book! The cafe is very cozy with big windows bringing in the natural light. You can sit indoors or outdoors. I didn’t see a parking lot. But there were lots of street options. The staff were welcoming and very nice.
I went with a Cobb salad and hubby got a burger & fries along with some drinky drinks. The salad was delicious! I had to remind them to bring the dressing, but no big deal. Unfortunately, hubbys food was cold. He’s very particular with the temperature of his food but he’s also not a complainer. The fries were good, they had this lime flavor seasoning. They would be amazing if they were hot.
Nonetheless, I would give them another shot. Will most definitely come back to try their coffee.
