Pet Care

Brier Veterinary Hospital
4311 212th St SW, Mountlake TerraceThe veterinary care I've received for my cat has always been attentive and caring and explained carefully. They reached out via phone/email to check on how she was doing while she was really sick, and I appreciated the attentiveness. My cat has kidney disease. The vet care these days feels pricey... but I don't think that it is unique to this clinic, having a friend whom is a vet it seems to be that vet care everywhere is pricey, and their prices are likely comparable to nearby clinic locations. They always explain the cost of things when I ask and what the different options are, with their price points, which I appreciate. I am often able to get a vet visit same week for my cat as need be, if not same day, which is also appreciated.

Cedar Plaza Vet Clinic
22803 44th Ave W b4, Mountlake TerraceMy pet pigeon wasn't feeling well and the regular veterinarian I go to was on vacation and wasn't available for another week and a half. I went on line to find a clinic that could see my pigeon sooner. Your clinic popped up and I saw Dr. Andrew Logan's name! I remembered him from my past experience at his former place of practice! I was delighted to see he was working there. Dr. Logan cared for my other pet pigeon about a year or so ago. I will be bringing my birds to your clinic next time the need arises. P.S. My pet pigeon seems to be feeling better after starting the antibiotics and Meloxidyl.
Warm regards.....

Animal Vision Center
24255 Van Ry Blvd Suite B2, Mountlake TerraceDr Landry and his team are awesome! They saw my pup for an eye ulcer that healed, but then wouldn’t stop leaking pus and crusties for 2 months. He and his team are super gentle, friendly, kind and I highly recommend! They answered all my questions and were very professional.
Two things of note as I’ve noticed lots of other reviews that talk about price and appointments—
1. I will say it was difficult to get a prompt appointment as I did have to wait over a month or two to be seen, BUT when her injury happened I contacted all animal eye docs in King county (plus one in Olympia WA) and ALL of those places were packed for months. I think because the field is so specialized it’s just harder with a ton of demand and not enough providers in the area. This is not their fault! I got an OK from my PCP that it was safe to wait for the eye doc appointment here at Animal Vision, but if not would have happily taken her to the emergency department.
2. For transparency purposes, I paid ~$800 for the exam plus foreign body removal (and medications) as they found a seed of grass embedded in my dogs third eyelid. Pricey, but likely pet insurance will cover about ~$500 of this for me. While I understand the frustration with costs, ultimately my dogs health is most important to me and I believe that all responsible pet owners should own pet insurance, especially if they know their pup is prone to accidents. To own a pet is to also be prepared for accidents and injuries that may be unexpected!
If I ever have another eye problem, I will for sure be bringing my dog to Animal Vision Center!

Hemlock State Brewing Co.
23601 56th Ave W Suite 400, Mountlake TerraceCame here about 20 min before close on Saturday. Asked if my friends and I could grab a quick beer and get out of there (bartenders have lives too). Bartender was super friendly and accommodating. I hadn't been before as I don't live in the area and got some samples of beers I might enjoy before making a decision. Honestly one of the best interactions I've had with service staff in a while. Really appreciated it. The beer was great too!

Las Espuelas
Cedar PLaza, 4306 228th St SW #9, Mountlake TerraceLas Espuelas (4306 228th St SW)
This casa at Cedar Plaza has been here for many years. It’s family-friendly, happy, and welcoming.
When my wife and I came for dinner, almost all the tables were taken. We sat down and immediately ordered the house margarita and shared a plate of steak fajitas.
While waiting, I looked around to soak everything in.
There were two saddles nestled on the ceiling beams. The walls were adorned with paintings of cowboys and horses and dusty trails. In fact, “Las Espuelas” means “the spurs” in Spanish, a nod to Western life.
Music played in the background. I knew not one word of what the singers were singing, but I could tell by the plaintive melody that they spoke of love and life in the most emotional tones. A busser said what I was hearing was ranchera music. I learned something new today.
I spotted a toddler in a high chair saying, “Mingo! Mingo!” Pretty soon, the owner of the restaurant, named Domingo, came moseying down the aisle. A silver-haired man with broad shoulders and a stern visage, Domingo doesn’t look like the type of guy anyone would mess around with. But when he reached the toddler, Domingo bent down, smiled at the child, and made a funny noise like an airplane swooping down. The toddler roared with delight.
When our drink arrived, it was tremendous. My wife said, “Goodness gracious, this thing weighs like five pounds!” I took a few sips for the sake of experiencing the moment. I took a few more sips because it was darn good.
The steak fajitas came sizzling on a plate. The roasted onions and bell peppers were perfectly matched with the smoky loveliness of the thin cuts of beef.
After a couple of servings, I said I’d had enough. But I had a couple more afterward.
We vowed not to take home a doggy bag, and we accomplished that goal.
When it was time to leave, there was a line at the front. This place is popular.
If you want to come here, better saddle up early. Mingo will be waiting.

Diamond Knot Brewpub @ MLT
5602 232nd St SW, Mountlake TerraceSometimes, Google Maps sends me on an adventure - Turn left, turn right, swim 2 miles, answer the riddle… You know what I'm talking about, right?
Today, it decided to play a trick on me and take me to the location of three restaurants I looked up. It's hard enough picking a good spot from the algorithms list. Imagine doing it from the parking lot. My choices were - Indian food at Shahi Tandoor and Grill, Mexican at Alberto Jr or pub food at Diamond Knot Brewpub. I was in the mood for a beer, so I chose Diamond knot.
The dining area was spacious, clean and neatly decorated. I was asked a series of questions about what kind of seat I wanted and led to a quiet table. I watched a tray arrive at another table and noted that the food looked kind of basic. That's OK, sometimes basic is just what you want. I was given a drinks menu and a food menu. OK, not really menus, more like one pagers with a short selection and a QR code for the rest of the menu. I used the QR code because the items on the list were not very exciting. I found a steak dip with fries and a Hefeweisen beer.
Kirsten came over to take my order and smile at me. She was very nice and efficient. My beer came right away and my food was ready not long after.
I was happy with what I ordered. The beer was cold and tasty. The sandwich was full of nicely seasoned beef, peppers and onions. The bread soaked up the au jus without falling apart. I would have liked a bit more flavor in the au jus, but it was not bad. The fries were good. There was a thin coating on them that added flavor and made them crispy. I thought about ordering a sauce for them ($.50 extra), but I was hungry and did not want to wait for it.
Now, the bad news. I like places that put a pickle spear on the plate. It is a different flavor that gives your palette a break from all the meaty fat. Places that don't serve one are OK, but if you want 5 stars, give people pickles. Diamond Knot does put pickles on the plate. They put them under the fries. I suspect they do that because they are ashamed of the dried out slices that they dredged out of the bottom of the can. Yuck.
The bill came with Kirsten's smile. $31.25! Even with today's food prices, that's a lot for an average quality lunch.
I'll be going back to try the Indian and Mexican food.
