Showtime Grooming
1929 Hyde St, San FranciscoThis was the best experience I've had with a groomer in the City.
From the first conversation on the phone, I was sold on bringing in our toy poodle, whose hair has been butchered all around San Francisco in the last two years. Bernard (the owner) was knowledgeable, passionate, and reassuring, so we gave it a shot. I'm SO glad we did.
The atmosphere was inviting and the crew welcomed us warmly. Time was taken to thoroughly discuss the cut and expectations, which I appreciated. Our girl was matted, so I knew it would be more than just a bath and shape, but she was finished well within the timeframe discussed.
We can always tell when our dog has been traumatized by a grooming, but she returned to us a bouncing, prancing happy little princess with the most adorable cut ever! The muzzle was a little long, though, so we gave her back and Bernard oversaw the redo until it was done to perfection.
Wow... what an amazing experience. I walked out a loyal customer. I'm so grateful to have a place to take her now that I can count on for quality work and a wonderful experience. I wholeheartedly endorse this business and hope they stay around for a long time.
Thank you, Showtime Grooming!

SF Woof Times
3584 San Bruno Ave, San FranciscoReynaldo and his assistants are great. Mudpuppy over in Castro was refusing to style-cut my 17yo toy poodle, claiming it "stresses her out." Reynaldo is a dog whisperer and seems to have a great bond with dogs. He's able to do the French poodle cut with no problem, so I started coming here. The price here is also a bit cheaper than MP, which is nice. The best part about coming here? You get to hang out for a bit with a dozen other well-behaved, sweet dogs. I kind of want to ask him if it's cool that I buy coffee and hang out here to do work. You know how there's cat cafes? This place is like the dog cafe version of that!

Golden Gate Home Hospice and Euthanasia
491 27th Ave, San FranciscoGolden Gate Vet helped me through one of the most difficult days of my life with grace and compassion. My beautiful boy Charlie became unexpectedly sick and failed efforts to medically manage his condition. I made the decision to end his life while he still had some quality of life. Golden Gate Vet walked me through this decision and helped reassure me throughout. Their team member who I spoke with and guided me was Zane, who was so warm and responsive and answered all my questions. On the day, Dr. Brian Van Horn came to my home and spent time getting to know my family. Charlie’s actual death was heart-destroying but there’s no escaping that, and Dr. Van Horn deeply cared and was present with me and Charlie through everything. Golden Gate Vet also helped set up Charlie’s private cremation and removed his body from my home.
They helped me navigate the most difficult day and decision of my life, and allowed Charlie to die with dignity at home surrounded by love and warmth and treats. I’m forever indebted to them.

Avenues Pet Hospital
2221 Taraval St, San FranciscoMy dog has been in the care of Avenues Pet Hospital for 3 years now. It can sometimes take a while to be seen for non-urgent stuff, such as the very first new client appointment and the annual exam, but otherwise my dog gets seen quite quickly as things come up (usually within a few days, and via email or phone when I have concerns but am not sure if they are worth an appointment). They did not allow people inside for a long while due to Covid safety restrictions, but we can now go inside to wait in the waiting room, and accompany our pets during their appointment. It seems silly for other reviews to complain about this when it was for a valid reason and not an arbitrary policy. The only times I can't accompany my dog is when he comes in for his regular nail trim and gland expression as an out-patient - this is done in the back where pet owners aren't allowed. FYI I get his nails done at the vet bc he has particularly long blood vessels / quicks in his nails, so I feel safer about it being done here, even though it's a roughly-done trim and I file them smooth at home. The vets are kind and I always feel like I'm getting their honest assessment. Front desk is also always very helpful. For reviews that mention they're rude - it can depend on the person tbh, but if anything I think some can be less warm than others, and I would *not* say at all that they've ever been rude. I think they're really busy nonstop and are doing their best to get through patients in an efficient manner -- and that can sometimes be interpreted as being a little cold, when really it's just being neutral. As a society we tend to think women are "cold" when they're not overly warm and are otherwise just being normal & neutral, yet don't think that of men doing the same. So let's check our gender bias, alright? One word of advice that I learned the hard way - most medications are substantially cheaper at Chewy or Costco, so ask them to send out the prescription! The vet office has zero problem doing that and it's never awkward. It's not a perfect system since Costco doesn't have everything, and Chewy takes some days for delivery (i.e., doesn't work for meds needed the same day). I don't say this as a knock against the hospital, as I think this is common practice for vets and helps keep the lights on. I instead say this as a heads up, because I didn't know this for the longest time.

San Francisco Pet Hospital
1371 Fulton St, San FranciscoWe've been going to S.F. Pet Hospital for more than two decades with four of our dogs plus a foster dog. Everyone is friendly and thorough and takes their time with us. But I'm writing now because yesterday Dr Leyba went above and beyond, and I'm pretty sure he saved our dog's life. River had been at the emergency vet on Fillmore for two days and nights, but he wasn't improving at home once he was released. He was getting much weaker and we were getting desperate. I called the emergency vet to say he was going downhill and ask for a new prescription but they never even called me back ( at all!). Enter S.F. Pet Hospital. Bisma took all our info and got it to Dr Leyba who read through every everything, then trouble shot with me despite his obviously very heavy work load. He was kind and thoughtful and together we came up with a course of action that resulted in a vividly improved dog this morning. Truly - our dog went from alarmingly, dangerously ill to bright eyed and hungry overnight. Without him I have no doubt he'd be back in the hospital right now. Thank God Dr Leyba at SF Pet Hospital stepped up and took over. I should add that he's not even our primary vet there! He's a hero in my book.

Pet Sitting & Training

Top Dog SF
2121 Taraval St, San FranciscoWe honestly do not know how we would have shaped Millie without Top Dog. We needed a safe and reliable place to socialize and train our puppy while keeping up with busy work schedules. After calling and touring various programs in the city, we left Top Dog feeling confident that Millie would be happy, safe, and learning. We enrolled her in Puppy Head Start, and it was a decision we never looked back on.
Throughout the program, Mike and team kept us closely updated on Millie's progress. We received frequent photos and videos that showed what she was practicing and how we could reinforce those skills at home. Mike is patient, kind, passionate, and knowledgeable. He helped us work through several tricky situations, especially around Millie's fears, and always gave us practical steps that worked. Raina and Michelle were also wonderful with Millie. They were warm and encouraging.
Millie is thrilled to go to Top Dog every time. She walks in with a happy, wagging tail, which tells us everything about how she is treated there. Top Dog has given us a well-supported start as new dog parents, and Millie absolutely loves it!

Tefani & So Dogcare
395 9th St, San FranciscoIf I could give more than 5 stars, I would. Having Tefani & So take care of my dog has turned out to be the best decision I made when I moved to San Francisco this summer. They are truly an excellent, caring, trustworthy, and thoughtful team, and I cannot sing their praises enough. They have been taking amazing care of my husky-labrador mix, Evie, all summer, and I am so glad that when I'm swamped with work, there is Tefani & So to hop in and care for her.
Thank you to Watson, Ricardo, Stina, Tyler, Daniel, and all of the folks making Tefani such a safe place for dogs. As an anxious pet parent, I am so glad I found such a trustworthy team. The team at Tefani is extremely friendly, communicative, and always happy to help with special dietary or medical needs that Evie might have. They are very knowledgeable, with a low staff-to-dog ratio; I knew Evie would be getting plenty of individualized attention every time she was with them.
The facilities at Tefani are clean and well-maintained, with multiple doors that ensure safety. Scheduling and convenience-wise, the Tefani team has been SO accommodating anytime I was running a few minutes late, and even accepting Evie for boarding when I had a few emergency scheduling conflicts that meant she had to stay late. They are the most understanding partners to work with, and have made my life as a working pet parent so easy.
Every day, Evie gets dropped off at Tefani between the hours of 8-9am, and goes to the dog park with the team for more than an hour. Then, they give her lunch that I provide and take her out for a potty break. I usually add the afternoon drop-off shuttle, and Evie gets dropped back at my apartment every day so I don't have to worry about missing the 5-6pm pick-up window. Shoutout to Tyler, who runs the shuttle!! He is super communicative about when he'll be dropping Evie back off and always provides an ETA and a picture of her safely at home.
Boarding Evie with Tefani has also been a dream. Shoutout to Ricardo for taking the most amazing care of Evie when I have to be out of town! I boarded her for a few weeks during the summer, and I always felt so safe because I knew Ricardo was taking excellent care of her. Once, Evie got an eye infection during boarding while I was traveling abroad, and Ricardo was so considerate and thoughtful. He took her to the vet, FaceTimed me from the clinic, answered all of my questions about her healing, and provided tons of updates that really quelled my anxiety. Otherwise, he always sends adorable daily pictures of their adventures and gives her lots of cuddles when she asks for them. Evie loves Ricardo so much that she now paws at the door whenever she sees him coming to greet her at daycare. She'll jump on him, give him kisses, and make happy cries -- something she only does with the people she loves the most.
I once saw the Tefani team in action when Evie and I were at the park at the same time as them. They truly love the dogs they work with, and know each dog's name by heart. They give each dog nonstop attention and genuinely care about every single one.
Most importantly, the Tefani team has given such care to Evie that she is now a transformed dog in terms of her confidence. As a former stray, Evie was very shy and reserved around groups of other dogs. However, since going to Tefani, she has grown immensely in confidence and socialization skills. She is now unafraid of new dogs at the park and will even initiate play with others. This transformation of my previously shy girl becoming a confident, happier doggo has made working with Tefani more than worth it.
Thank you, Tefani & So, for being the best doggy daycare I could've asked for in SF. Evie loves you all!

Cyd came to my house and gave me and my pup very personal training. Cyd is incredibly caring about canine welfare and it is clear she has done a lot of research on the subject. She is very clear that she is against using any aversive techniques in dog training and will only use positive reinforcement. Cyd does more than just train dogs, she also trains owners to effectively handle and train their own dogs. I was very appreciative that she was able to work around my schedule and come to my house for training. It made everything a lot easier for a frazzled guy trying to deal with a new dog.

899 Hyde St, San FranciscoThis place is a cute little neighborhood gem. We were just visiting but we saw several people come in and be recognized by the owner and staff. It has a nice little local vibe. The coffee is good and the tuna melt is truly the best I've ever had.

Liholiho Yacht Club
871 Sutter St, San FranciscoLiholiho is a fantastic restaurant! The space is modern and beautifully designed, with an open kitchen where you can watch everything being prepared, which adds a lot of energy and transparency to the dining experience.
The service was very friendly, attentive, and quick. The cocktails were excellent, and even the non-alcoholic one I ordered was made with care and tasted great.
The food was outstanding. The bun with beef tongue was extraordinary, the tuna tartare and ceviche were perfectly balanced and fresh, and the shrimps with crispy rice were especially memorable. All dishes showed creativity, originality, and were prepared with high quality ingredients.
For three people, including first and main courses, drinks, and one dessert, the bill came to $260, which I found fair for this level of quality. The only minus point is that the restaurant does not offer coffee, which would have been a nice way to finish the meal.
Overall, I really enjoyed everything at Liholiho. Highly recommended, and I hope I will get to return again!
