When the new Walgreens drugstore opens in mid-December, the Rossville Walgreens and Duane Reade stores will shut down. Duane Reade is located in a shopping center next to Mignosi's. The small Walgreens was located behind the Woodrow Shopping Plaza.
Walgreens spokesman Phil Caruso said the company considers these store closings more of a relocation. Any prescriptions at the closing stores will be sent to the new location. The newest location will be at the Woodrow Shopping Plaza along Rossville Ave.
Walgreens is also closing two Staten Island stores - the Victory Boulevard location, which opened two years ago, and the Rosebank. Walgreens is trying to cut costs down by closing the doors of 200 of the 8,000 stores it currently operates. The effort is to reduce costs by $500 million.
Caruso said the Rossville closures were never a part of this plan. He said opening the new stores would put the store in a prime shopping area.
Walgreens purchase Duane Reade for over $1 billion in 2010.
