AAA Pioneer Valley recently made its move to the bigger offices at the Fresh Acres Plaza, formerly the Blockbuster movie rental store, in the Sixteen Acres neighborhood in Springfield. With the move, Springfield residents may now use the Registry of Motor Vehicles services.
According to an AAA Pioneer Valley spokeswoman, the agency's former location was not big enough to provide these services. The new office opened at the start of the year, with a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony to take place in the future.
The office can provide AAA Travel, AAA Insurance and AAA Driving School services as well as the Registry of Motor Vehicles services.
The building is 17,000 square feet and is 70% bigger than its Liberty Street facility. Many had considered it to be an outdated, inadequate location with not enough parking.
Thanks to an agreement with the state, AAA provides some of the registry services to its members. AAA members can renew or get a duplicate driver's licenses and they can renew or transfer registration of their vehicle, trailer, camper, trailer or commercial vehicle. They can also request a duplicate title.
State-run RMV offices do not open on Saturdays and are only open until 6 p.m. Thursdays.
In January, MassDOT opened a new RMV location in Springfield Plaza, replacing the Liberty Street location that didn't have enough space or parking.
The move allows AAA Pioneer Valley to offer RMV services at three of its locations - Hadley and West Springfield are the other two. Greenfield is the only location that has no RMV service, but there is an RMV service close by.
The spokesperson said the state will offer some RMV services at every AAA location to ease RMV lines and make it convenient for AAA members.
